scrapdaddy
Hello to everybody, Yea I'm a noob with a new to me Peter Wright. 146 pounds, looks good to me. I've got some questions for you all. It's sitting for now on one of my welding tables and if I hit it in the middle, it just sounds dead, flat , no ring. If I hit it out by the Hardy Hole, it rings real loud. Also the hammer will bounce very high when hit in the middle. I'm not really hitting it very hard, just wanted to test the ring, that I was reading about. Does this all sound about right for a Peter Wright. Thank You for your time, Ron
robert hanford
My Peter Wright rings very little, but I get a lot of work done on it!
basher
I wouldn't even consider , worry about or bother with the ring. It really means nada as far as the quality and usability of the anvil. peter writes can be very nice, get some hot metal on it!!
ThomasPowers
A ringing anvils ring is definitely louder and a different tone out on the unsupported edges. It should still have a ring in the center but if it doesn't so what?---You already own the anvil USE IT!
scrapdaddy
Thanks for the replys, I didn't know if something was wrong with it, cracked, etc. Used it today alittle, feels good to own one.
eric sprado
All an anvil ring does is MAKE YOU DEAF!!!!!!! That is all. When folks say " it has a nice ring" I want to say "Oh, I'm so sorry". Many of us go to great lengths to quiet our anvils down...Ever notice how many of us old metal smackers wear hearing aids????
Tom Allyn
A 'dead' anvil can be indicative of an anvil with flaws in it. So you're right in asking about your anvil. But the proof is in the putting. Put some hot metal on it and bang away. Odds are you have a fine anvil there.
ThomasPowers
Dead zone can indicate a delamination issue---but not much you can do about that till you get total failure---which might not be in your lifetime. So use it. Having an anvil will often lure other anvils to you and you can always upgrade later.
hans138
ya thats my guess is delamination, especially if you only get that dead "thwack" sound from one part of it. but dont worry about it who nows how long its been like that. i could out last you
