Trackinman
Gentlemen, I purchased a Peter Wright brand anvil today. It seems pretty solid and is one heavy chuck of steel! Has anyone of you had experience with this brand of anvil and could tell me the "pros" and "cons" about it? Thanks, Trackinman
Brian C.
I have a 147# PW and it is just fine. They are very common here in the USA, apparently they were imported by the boat load. All in all it is a very good anvil.
Blacksmith Jim
I have a 120+ lb Peter Wright. I love it :)
Ian
I've worked a few PW's myself and I like them, but considering they are English I might be biased! Kholswa are good as well, as are Sodofors, Bofors, Mousehole, Trentons and many others. As long as it 'feels' good to you, it's good enough. Russian anvils are better used as door stops, although recently someone said after re heat treating theirs it actually wasn't that bad. ThomasPowers
BTW the only part of the Peter Wright that is "steel" is probably the face plate the rest should be high grade wrought iron... Thomas
Trackinman
Thanks to all who responded. The anvil was covered with a surface rust, and came off well with a wire cup brush on my side grinder. Is there a way ya'll would recommend to "cure" (as in cast iron fry pan) the anvel and prevent further rusting? Trackinman
Glenn
Use it daily, no rust. If you put a light coating of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) on the face of the anvil it keeps the rust down. ATF does not get on the hot steel the next time you use the anvil like some other things that have been recommended.
