tantofolder
Here is my first tomahawk. It's made from a rail spike.I made the the drift for it myself from a piece of a pinch bar(dang that steel is tough) which started out as 1" diameter.I made it teardrop shaped.I still cant remeber how I got my one photo on here so here's a link:http://s1087.photobucket.com/albums/j476/tantofolder/?action=view¤t=railspiketomahawk.jpg
Drewed
Wow! I assume that the spike is the pointy end, and the blade is the "head" end?

bigfootnampa
Nice job you did! I think you need to graduate to some larger hunks of steel. That's as nice as any I have seen from a spike! Very well proportioned!
Drewed
That is really nice! How big is it?
tantofolder
Thanks guys, I am unsure of its length.....I donated it to iron in the hat at my blacksmith meeting today. Thanks bigfootnampa, yeah I think I am done with rail spikes at least for right now.

VaughnT
That's some good-looking work! I usually dread looking at 'railroad spike' work but I'm glad I stopped in here!

Thom Noblitt y Gonzalez
After readding this post I happened to come across this video and felt it might be relevent. It appears to be a demo where the presenter even went as far as to forge weld in a peice of 1095 for the edge material. I had herd of railroad spike knives but hadn't thought of tomahawks before. After seening your work and this video I guess they can be done. I was wondering though how did you do your spike? It looks like you took the edges down to form the spike since you have those flate edges along the side.

tantofolder
Thom ,Sorry for the late response(I have not been here in a while). For the spike,I drew out the tapered end and twisted it behind the "eye".Then I used a spring fuller between the "eye" and the spike to make the diameter smaller.A little file work to clean it up and it was done. tantofolder
Yep,my first one.I had done a lot of reading first though on techniques(here and elsewhere). Before this I had made 2 rail spike knives, and 1 leaf spring knife. Here are the spike knife links:http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/24255-rail-spike-knife/http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/24636-rail-spike-kukri/ With so much much work involved start to finish, I plan to move onto better material in the future(if I ever have free time again  ).
