ghunter594 Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Would this anvil be a good buy? It is a Fisher anvil, looks to be older model. He says it's 135 lbs, looks to be in rougher shape. This would be my first anvil, and i would be using it to make knives. Is it a good deal? and if i go look at it, what should i look for? Thanks http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/tls/2721143339.html Quote
Bigred1o1 Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 thats not to bad i would see if you can haggle with him some but it looks like there is plenty of usable face left on that anvil and the hardy hole looks to be in good shape that is a not half bad price just my op though if you could get that for 50 or so it would be a very good deal Quote
caotropheus Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 ghunter, I would buy it, mostly for the fun of repairing it and bring it back to life. Just like Bigred said, try to get a lower price... Quote
clinton Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Someone must have thought it was a good deal, it seems to be gone now. Did you get it? Quote
ghunter594 Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 yep, i did. It's a little rough, but it's usable. I believe the date says it was made in 1873. The man i bought it from was about 60 some years old, and he said it was his fathers. He was pretty firm on the price, but I got it for $70. I think it'll clean up good with a wire brush and some time. Is it ok to use like 100 grit sandpaper on the face?? i would like to get it real smooth, although it is already pretty smooth. Quote
Thomas Dean Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 With out pictures it is hard to say to sand or not to sand....If it was mine I would use it as is, you'll be surprised how little effect those small dings will have on your work....unless you are making surgical equipment. And $70 for a 135# Fisher....you done really good!!!! Quote
Bigred1o1 Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 glad you got it over all besides from the chips it looked good i have to admit i tend to buff the face on my anvils if i get a "new" rusty one just to have a good start no need to polish it though just do a clean up and enjoy it Quote
pkrankow Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Wire brush then use it. It will clean up from use...and post pictures! Phil Quote
