Mr Martin your bad was assembly spelt lazy.

Shouldn't that be assy? Or is that another word like donkey? :P

It looks like the style of the peter wright vices that I have. Mine are steel though.

I've wondered if they were a replacement when a screwbox stripped out. Any markings on it? I'd think if it was original that the makers would stamp it.

DON'T KNOW GUY BUT OUT OF 12 POST VISES I HAVE HAD ONLY ONE WAS STAMPED didn't see any marks wish there was.

The threads were square and showed little or no wear.

with metal prices today I would scrap that box and buy a new vice with change to spare, I was going to pickup a brass barstock 3/8x3/4 22" long and they wanted $55.00 lol....

Since Babbitt was used to repair stripped out screw boxes, and early ones (or repairs) were made by brazing in the female screw thread I'd have to think that a copper alloy screwbox could work just fine if kept clean and greased.

I was just yesterday talking to a blacksmithing equipment dealer, and saw a post vise in his inventory with a brass screw box. I commented on it, and he said he has seen many of them over the years. This was the first I had seen. They are really beautiful all polished up!
If I had to guess, I would say that is an Iron City vise.
