September 26, 201114 yr It looks like the style of the peter wright vices that I have. Mine are steel though. Rob
September 28, 201114 yr I've wondered if they were a replacement when a screwbox stripped out. Any markings on it? I'd think if it was original that the makers would stamp it.
September 29, 201114 yr Author DON'T KNOW GUY BUT OUT OF 12 POST VISES I HAVE HAD ONLY ONE WAS STAMPED didn't see any marks wish there was.
September 29, 201114 yr with metal prices today I would scrap that box and buy a new vice with change to spare, I was going to pickup a brass barstock 3/8x3/4 22" long and they wanted $55.00 lol....
September 29, 201114 yr Since Babbitt was used to repair stripped out screw boxes, and early ones (or repairs) were made by brazing in the female screw thread I'd have to think that a copper alloy screwbox could work just fine if kept clean and greased.
September 30, 201114 yr I was just yesterday talking to a blacksmithing equipment dealer, and saw a post vise in his inventory with a brass screw box. I commented on it, and he said he has seen many of them over the years. This was the first I had seen. They are really beautiful all polished up! If I had to guess, I would say that is an Iron City vise.
