Hayden H
I forged out the rough shape of 2 rail road spike tomahawks today, tomorrow I'll slit one with the hot chisel, and maybe order a drift. Is it better to slit then shape to preferred handle diameter? Or just buy the drift set?

rsilver4
You should do the upsetting and slit and drift the eye first, before shaping the blade, cause that is hardest part to get right-If that don't turn out right,it goes in the scrap before you waste any more time...I usually mess one or two before getting one right--5/8" square ain't much,I have done a bunch and they ain't easy --Good Luck
ThomasPowers
There are slitters and punches that make holes in stock and then their are drifts that shape holes already made. Your question as stated seems odd. Were you thinking of using a drift as a punch? There are also "combo tools" like a slitter/drift or a punch/drift. Either way the hole comes first and then you shape to final form. I like slitting for most stuff. Though sometimes punching leaves a better shape to the stock for certain things.
