Steve Shimanek
I finished this yesterday; steel is from a 1 inch coil spring salvaged from the scrapyard; forged from a 1 1/2 inch length (just wanted to see if I could do it) differentially quenched with local koa wood handle, copper spacer, and brazing rod pins. 8.5 inches overall length with a blade length of 4 1/8 " and width of 1 7/16"; I call it a utility/skinner or it could be a mini-Bowie. Comments welcome, aloha, Steve
wolfshieldrx
That's called "nice work" in any language. Looks like a real practical package! Bart
CurlyGeorge
That's a nice knife, Steve. Only 1 1/2" of spring? Well, you answered your question of if you can do it. You did a very good job on it. Thanks for sharing it with us. :D
Ed Steinkirchner
I really like to make useful items out of odds and ends around the shop, especially the trim from cutting off on the hardy. That's where most of my small tools come from. If I didn't know better I would say you couldn't make a 8.5 inch knife out of 1.5 inches of spring That's why forging has an advantage over stock removal in my opinion. Great knife and can't wait to see more. Ed Steinkirchner
Steve Shimanek
The steel I used was a cutoff from another project and had been laying around for a while; I was curious to see what could be done with it. Thanks for the comments! Steve

keithl
Wow, good forging from such a small piece. It's nice to make useful things from virtually nothing, nice work. Keith.
