son_of_bluegrass
I'm being informed I ain't posting often enough so here is the only thing i've gotten finished in a while. A set a carpenter's marking knives for my own use from old file material. Since they are for my own use, I didn't spend too much time making them pretty, just functional. ron

Candidquality
I've actually never heard the term "marking knife" would you mind giving a bit of detail as to what these functional knives are for? just looking at it I was thining about them being the blades for an angle planer. ThomasPowers
Back before the common pencil was cheap and easily found you marked your lines with an awl or knife---actually does a better job as the indent allows you to start a cut with saw or chisel and not have tearout on the face. However mismeasurements are a pain to correct though. These look like the japanese version.
me miller
What is the old saying- mmeasure twice cut once. Mike
V
are those like a sort of carving pourpuoses?
son_of_bluegrass
Every set I've seen look about like that; some with handles, some (like these) without. If it is japanese style, what other styles are (were) out there? They are not for carving so much as putting a mark on wood as to show where to cut. ron
oakwoodforge
Nice Job on those Ron, I've made a few like that as well. They work very nicely for marking fine layout lines for furniture or trim & finish work, for some reason the knife scored line helps reduce tear-out when sawing. That and marking against streight edge with a knife is much more accurate than marking with a pencil. And I've found that they do work nicely for chip carving and some relief carving as well as just basic whittling. Jens
mcraigl
Just went to Woodcraft last week and the ones they had were priced at $35 to 50 each. I got a buddy who's into fine jointery and I might have to make him one for Christmas.
son_of_bluegrass
The last ones I prices were about $20 each. I said I can make them for less than that and have something totally unique. At $35 or 40 I could stand to make some for sale. ron
