marking knives

Recommended Posts

Back before the common pencil was cheap and easily found you marked your lines with an awl or knife---actually does a better job as the indent allows you to start a cut with saw or chisel and not have tearout on the face. However mismeasurements are a pain to correct though.

These look like the japanese version.

Nice Job on those Ron, I've made a few like that as well. They work very nicely for marking fine layout lines for furniture or trim & finish work, for some reason the knife scored line helps reduce tear-out when sawing. That and marking against streight edge with a knife is much more accurate than marking with a pencil. And I've found that they do work nicely for chip carving and some relief carving as well as just basic whittling.
