Arbalist
I went to a Medieval Festival at Herstmonceux Castle yesterday and saw a few Blacksmith related bits. I didn't get chance to speak to this guy but wondered how old this Anvil is. Looks the right sort of shape for a 500 year old Anvil? Vic. njanvilman
Definately pre 1800. Dating early anvils is tough. But it looks like early engravings of images of armor makers and their tools.

ThomasPowers
Ahh I would say a continental anvil of the 19th century due to the handling hole shown. I have never seen medieval or renaissance ones with handing holes. However the shape is quite a good stand-in for a medieval anvil and I would be happy to have it myself! Sam Thompson
Those anvils are not uncommon over here, they sometimes turn up on E-bay and at farm sales. A friend of mine has one with the far left corner rounded so that it looks a bit like the things that chainmakers use. It's useful for drawing down. I like to think of it as the 'Mk 1 bick' from which all others evolved. I'll take some pics next time I'm there.
