dickb
I bought this unusual hammer, see picture. It's a straight pein hammer , weighs 3 pounds nine ounces including handle, and has a seven eighths hole straight through parallel with the handle. It was made by Stanley, the name is punched into the hammer. Any idea what it was called and why the hole??? Please check the next reply, I included pictures. Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver
sorry, I thought I had attached a picture, I will try again. Liked the size but not the weight?
Mainely,Bob
If it had Bell Systems on it somewhere I would say it was a lineman`s hammer and the hole was used to wind the spikes they use for steps into the telephone poles.
edge9001
that sounds ike a plausible accessment to me..it's a linemans hammer...or just the coolest smithing hammer(with a hole in it) i've ever seen.
thecelticforge
Yep, it's a lineman's hammer.
Dick L.
I have a lineman's hammer with the hole but mine is a crosspein. It weighs 3 lbs. Dick
ThomasPowers
Mine is a straight peen. I have a short handle in it for getting "up close and personal" (and is stamped Bell System)
MattBower
Doesn't seem like you'd want to do a lot of heavy hammering with the pein end.
ThomasPowers
Yes it's a little thin for heavy hammering with that straight pein. I have a 17# cross pein I can do heavy drawing out with and a lighter straight pein where the pein looks like a piece of 1" round stock that's great for drawing with.
