craig
You could use basically any scrap depending on the size you want, although coil spring, torsion bars, equipment shafts, sucker rod, and car axles would probably work fine and can be found in a variety if lengths and thicknesses. craig
PS... As far as store bought goes...if you're looking at a blackmithing tool supply store then you're bound to find plenty. ;-)
jimbob
you could use a brick layers chisel ...the this one about 1 1/4 wide and 1/4 thick about 12 inches long they cost about $7 have to dress the working end .
pkrankow
Steel bull pins have been mentioned, about $20 apiece. Used to line up girder holes and such. Phil
ThomasPowers
I get such stock at fleamarkets much cheaper than store bought stuff. If you are buying stuff new just go ahead and order the item from a smithing supply place! Exp bull pins---I don't pay more than $2 for them. Jack hammer shaft would probably make a good drift for that and if you must go the store route may be found worn out or broken cheap at tool rental places---some places will give them to you for *free*! Save the section with the ridge to make hardy tools with.

pkrankow
No I haven't. I have family in Cleveland, so that's not a difficult trek. Almost between here and there. Come warm weather I think I'll have to go see, since I expect that the day vendors have better selection. Phil
rakessler
does anyone know a good store bought hot punch or equivlent and i need to make a hot drift for a tomahawk head for the handle what is a good steel i could use that i can find in a juckyard or scrap pile? Hello I found a set of three forged driffs, if u ,or I were to make them I wouid use an air hardening tool steel and keep a bucket of water handy to continually cool the tools as u drive the 3 different sized driff. I feel very forturate to have found a set of 3. I also found someone using a very old drift as a hammer. Needless to say I made him an offer he could refuse.
