December 10, 200916 yr Author try the other side of the hudson (Kingston) I went through some used shops last year and there were some for sale about $75.00 to big to take on the plane or ship home for me I'll have to check that out. You don't happen to remember where you went?
December 10, 200916 yr I was wondering what you were "smoking". You can only use babbit on a brand new screw. Don't ask me how I know.
December 11, 200916 yr Grant, I'll have to try "brazing" with copper wire sometime. I can think of one or two things to try it on already. Phil
December 11, 200916 yr OBTW: there are different grades of babbit, the high strength stuff is mostly tin. Strangely, it's called "nickel" babbit even though it has no nickel in it.
December 11, 200916 yr Funny it was provided as a usable method to repair old post vise screw boxes in "Practical Blacksmithing" as I recall. Perhaps your sooting wasn't up to snuff or your screw was so worn that the change in thread shape over the length cause problems
December 16, 200916 yr Excuse me, if not in a theme. Help to find information. Perhaps it is on the forum, but I dont know much English and I cant find anything. How did forged post vice? The most difficult thing in a post vice - thread, the question is: how forged thread? Screw, I understand, I can do twisting, but the internal thread?.. Your English beats the **** out of my Ukrainian! (Beats the **** out of is Cowboy talk for "is much better than") This article will help. If you need any help with the language, I'm sure we'll all try to help.
December 16, 200916 yr After all that... I forgot the link to the articleRestoration of Leg Vises Part 1 By James R. Melchor and Peter M. Ross [07/01;S;107f2]
December 16, 200916 yr This one has cracked where the front jaw "eye" was forge welded to the arm. After straightening both the front and rear I'll grind out the cracked area and stick weld it back solid. Any ideas on the manufacturer of this one? The "C" is stamped on the front upright below the handle. Thought the decoration on the screw box might be an indication of the maker.
