September 10, 200916 yr First show is 2 days away and I'm still scrambling - but I'll survive. Here is the last piece to come off the forge (and the welder) before the event. It's only 16" overall but it just emanates evil in person. I throws remarkably well too though I didn't design it that way, but I think it's more of a decoration than anything.
September 10, 200916 yr your kidding? decoration? i do thrown weapons SCA style and i would soooo.... throw that as a regular piece in my reprituar... it looks good and if you say it has a good rotation... well then!
September 10, 200916 yr is the head made from a RR spike it looks simular to one the is forged out on the head looks really cool !!! I do the mountain men thing so I get to throw things around too. HEE HEE!!! Gaylan
September 11, 200916 yr Author Yeah, it's just a RR spike. I threw it a few times and it absolutely devastated the old wooden door I was using for a target. However, the handle did begin to bend in that tapered area just under the head. If I get around to making another one with a metal handle, I won't be tapering it. It will need every bit of that 1/2" square on the handle to minimize the bending. Obviously steel isn't the best material for a handle for many reasons, but It will only straighten so many times before the inevitable break. But Ohhhhhhhhhhh the heft!
September 11, 200916 yr Nice weapon. I like the bottom of the handle with the close twists and the end welded back to itself. How is a throwing axe supposed to balance? Switch to a medium carbon handle to make it more springy. You can also heat treat the handle to improve toughness. Phil

September 11, 200916 yr things are only evil if they bite... that would make my whole shop and 75% of my weapons and about 50% of my house and my 10 year old evil... hmmm... and a few friends, lol
