June 25, 200916 yr I had an interesting experience today. Helping a friend with a project and needed to drill some holes. I asked if he had a drill press, He said his neighbor did so we went over there. I needed to straighten someting also and asked the neighbor if he had an anvil or at least something to beat on. He said that there was an anvil in the back corner. I went back and there was my first anvil. I built it from a piece of 3" by 4" steel back in the 60's, gave it to a friend in the 70's. The friend has moved away, but there it was on the stand I had built from metal fence posts, rebar and angle iron. I'll try to go back and get pictures. Edited June 25, 200916 yr by Jack Evers
June 25, 200916 yr When you build something, build it right and make it pretty. You never know where it will show up later LOL. Congratulations on finding your first anvil, again, 40 years later.
June 26, 200916 yr Author That's very cool Jack. How'd it make you feel to see it again? Frosty Loved seeing it was still being used.
June 26, 200916 yr About 15-20 years ago I torched out and ground a really basic RR rail anvil for one of the electricians at work and made a holder that'd slip into the trailer hitch receiver. I drove by him working on a street light a couple months ago and he was banging away on something on it. Felt good. Frosty
September 23, 200916 yr Author Finally got by to take pictures. Crude, but it gave me good service and still gets used. Today the stand would be a lot shorter and a lot heavier. I'd gone to the junkyard to look for RR rail, but that piece of steel was right by the door and it looked good to me.
September 24, 200916 yr i'm not sure what looks cooler the anvil or the toolbox mounted on the 3 point hitch but i guess as this is a blacksmith forum i should go with the anvil
September 24, 200916 yr I'd have to say you did just fine, it's obviously seen plenty of use and it's held up nicely. Of course the tool box is cool too. Frosty
September 24, 200916 yr OK, so from that picture, how did you recognize your work? I mean... its not like you welded your name into it... oh, sorry. :)
September 24, 200916 yr Author Right, after all these years it was hard to know it was really the one I built -- just something about it said it had been mine.
