  1. Thanks for the input everyone, got the mud dauber nests cleaned out, the rust brushed off, and a fresh tank of gear oil along with a fresh coat of oil on the outside. The blower works like a champ, the only thing left is to forge a new handle as this one was missing one. Ill post pics soon.
  2. Now that im working on a new solid fuel forge I decided to pull out the old crank blower thats been sitting in a corner of my shop. At first It seemed locked up, but after dissasembly I realized the gearbox was solid mud-dauber nest. After cleaning, scrubbing, and re-oiling the gears, redoing the gasket on the gear box, and partly reassembling it seems to work like a charm. Two questions, A. How much is a blower like this worth? Its a Royal Western Chief with a stand (ill get a pic if it later). B. What kind of oil do yall use in these? Will higher viscosity gear oil like I run in my mill work? Or do I need something thinner? Any tips or tricks greatly appreciated!
  3. When I had to repair my bent handle, i removed the screw from the vise and heated the handle in the forge. Im sure cutting the old one off and welding a new end and forging it to a ball wouldnt be super hard.
  4. He was ready to get out of the truck at that point. and I will be sure to give him extra scratches for you! His big 110 pound baby self.
  5. There are a lot of people here in SW Arkansas and Texas that eat them.
  6. They are bad here in SW Arkansas as well, they trap them all around my house. I have shot one in my front yard and haven’t seen any in the yard since. Between the armadillos and feral pigs I'm not sure what has messed my yard up more.
  7. I listen to a mix of podcasts and music, when i blast tunes its usually either rock like Dropkick Murphys or The Street dogs, or cowboy/country like Coulter Wall, Corb Lund, Turnpike Troubadors, or lost dog street band, or trad irish music like The Dubliners or the Clancy Brothers. Or some random stuff like Furr, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin or whatever whim I fancy that day,
  8. Here is my shop dog Murphy. He is the biggest baby ever.
  9. I have actually, when I was 16 I took on of the classes while it was still in Historic Washington and thats what eventually sucked me back down to this corner of the state. And just under 1 and a half decades so far ;). The castle really was a cool project and it was a great learning experience, maybe one of these days someone will buy it and do something cool with it. I have! Im pretty sure one of my buddies from NWA is part if BOA. Ive never heard if any chapters down in the Southern part of the state sadly. And thats terrible, COVID has definitely made things rough the last few years.
  10. That is a small world! And yep that was the one and same castle. I was the on site blacksmith the last year they were in business. It was a really cool project and it was a shame that the investor pool had so many problems. As far as I remember it was only three years into the twenty year project. It definitely got hot working the coal forge in the Arkansas summer heat with no modern amenities on hand.
  11. I have met a few people by the last name of Arnold around her actually! and yes sir, I originally started doing historical ironwork, I worked for a period at a castle in North Arkansas of all places, and worked for several years at Historic Washington state Park in SW Arkansas. I hope to get back into some historical work before too long.
  12. Hello! Not really a new member as I have lurked for several years. I have been blacksmithing since I was 14 but unfortunately due to work and where I lived I wasn't able to do much the last few years. Now that I have a new house and a dedicated shop that I am getting set up, I hope to get fully back in the swing of things. I love seeing all the great knowledge and ideas being shared her and hope to start contributing soon. I started with bladesmithing and blacksmithing but the last few years have gotten into machining and gunsmithing as well. Sorry for the long introduction but I figured it was time to formally introduce myself and stop hiding in the shadows. Cheers! Luke S.
