welcome to the forum! big blue are definitely quality, but very pricey. i would suggest peddinghaus.

in my current (soon to change) shop, i don't have anything set up as far as a sound system gos, so i sing and play harmonica........ A LOT. country, gospel, bluegrass, celtic, you get the id. have to say i sound kinda funny singing bluegrass with no music, except for harmonica which i can't play when i'm singing.

my way of testing something for safety is generally to do it and see what happens, which, although it is effective, isn't always pretty. (guess that comes from being young and dumb) anyway, listen to jhcc. THAT's a piece of advice u can trust.

it looks to me like it is only black paint. wouldn't worry over it. at the same time, just cause i'd do it doesn't mean its safe.

it's my (limited) understanding that you can lower the carbon of steel by overheating / heating to many times, but i dont think the actual hammering will do that. i am not sure on that, though.
