Hi Everyone,

So I was listening to the Blacksmith's Pub podcast, I think it was Episode 20 (but I am not a 100%) and the guest said he was teaching a class. With one guy attending and he said within 10 mins of forging he could tell that this guy was never going to be able to go professional.

This made me think is this really possible, and thought I would ask what people thought about the idea.

Welcome, sounds like your off to a great start. Can't wait to see some photos of your work.

I made a leaf key fob, but I made a new veining fuller to use out of coil spring. I am happy with the look it gives.

I also made a little door stop for in the house, was also my first attempt at a scroll only a little one but I am pretty happy with it.

Both are made from 12 mm square.

Still, great tool material. 

I did think the same when I opened a few but they were all sealed, apparently just been stored for a very long time in some very bad conditions.

The one on the top was out of the scrap bin though.  

I got given all these coil springs today, they were all unused and still in the boxes.

Should be good for a good number of tools.

You might be able to use parkersteels for stock if they deliver to your area. I have heard a few good reports about them.

No problem, it does look very nice i really like the twist.

You could do a hot vegetable oil finish for it. This will be food safe, and give it protection against rust.

I made this reverse twist bottle opener,it is made from 12mm square.

I did a single twist at the top and then two twists.

It is funny i had not seen this style of anvil before and then on the baba facebook page. A blacksmith in Morocco has just posted a picture with the samr style.

Just thought that was quite cool.

My first forge was half of a 6x4 shed, with my forge just outside the door meant I could work small pieces and muffled some of the noise for my neighbours.

Now I am in a 20x10 workshop, with a good solid concrete floor to bolt my vice to. It has made such a difference as now I can work no matter the weather.

That is a very nice knife, I really like the look of that handle.

I was curious as I had seen that the lower the speed could go the more suitable it was for metal to prevent drill bits burning out.

The tolerances isn't to much of an issue as I will be only using it on handmade items.

I might keep an eye out for a decent second hand one and if I don't find anything just wait for the next DIY sale they have.

I would love to get a proper industrial one that i know will just keep going but I know i won't have that kind of cash for a while.

I was just hoping to upgrade from the handheld setup and the 3 year warranty is a big selling point. I could have a look for a good quality second hand one bu need do more reading on what to check for.

Well I did think that but I then compared it to the Clarke Metalworker and the speeds seemed comparable if not slightly lower.

The Clarke's ranger was 620-2620.

I would be drilling Metal with it nothing more than 10mm as I would be using it for the mouting holes for hooks and the like anything thicker I would punch the hole through hot.

I am just not used to the spec for drills presses and seem to see them vary greatly between the machines.

Hi All,

I have seen this drill press for sale, and would like some advice on whether it is worth getting.

My current setup is I drill free hand or use a hand drill in a drill press but I have run into a few issues with this setup as my only way to kill the drill is to reach over and pull the plug.

I did a fair bit done today. I got the finish on my hearts and made an extra hook. I also had a go at some hoof picks and I made my first bottle openers.

I was really happy with these as the fullers on the shoes were right round so I had to forge weld them together to get a nice solid tip.

All this because I was stupid enough to not turn off the grinder, and remove a hanging piece of steel with hand. No, I wanted to proceed quickly. Now here is quick for me, isn't it?

Anyway, thank God I have so light surface wound that I can walk and stand without further problems or pain. The funniest thing was that in the ER they taped it together! I was worried if it got stiched or sew but modern times: strips of tape hold together the two parts
