  1. Was finally able to get coal to burn today and decided to try a heart again, the last one was pretty dreadful and this one isn't much better but I'm gonna keep trying with this. I had been thinking of keychain ideas and this being a fairly western part of nowhere everybody has horse shoe crosses and similar, some people have horseshoe hearts on the wall, I have not seen a horseshoe heart keychain though. This is just a rough shaping as I didn't know if I could work this size and have it still look like a horse and it's also bigger that I would like but I think it shows promise
  2. That first bag that I had I didn't have too much problem keeping it lit, I probably wasn't working my steel long enough though so I wasn't giving it enough time to go out.
  3. Like I said the only thing different about lighting the fire is the coal, still using the same pine kindling as I had before this shtuff just doesn't want to burn, sometimes it will glow for a bit and go out, sometimes it will actually light for a bit and go out while I'm cranking. Once I decided that I needed more air in the new forge and put my blower back on the river forge that I had been using I was having the same troubles. It had been long enough between burns that I had kind of forgotten that I was also having troubles before as well.
  4. Has anyone gotten a bag that just won't burn? I got a couple bags lst fall that were great then got a couple more this spring, I'm still on the first bag but can't get anything done because it just will not catch. The only part of the process that's changed is the coal.
  5. I can't remember now, it was when I first started out and didn't write anything down.
  6. Most of it is easy it's just that one angle that I had trouble doing I had thought about that and forgotten to actually try I think that will probably work the best. Thank you for the idea and reminder
  7. I'll probably be corrected on some points but that is a bridge anvil. It was used in the oilfield because it what's best suited for the types of forging a that were needed before the time of " we need 'this' so have it in 30 minutes." I believe the designer would have given enough mass to work on but also have been light weight enough to be carried easily from well head to well head.
  8. I'll post s better picture tomorrow but I think it's essentially the same, though with the current set up the handle bumps.
  9. I have a drop ash dump, doesn't show up well in the 3rd pic but it's there.
  10. i haven't had the chance to try again since I got it "done" but I'm thinking that I don't have enough air pressure. My first thought for a fix is to straighten up the duct. I'm not real sure why but I'm guessing that the horizontal 90• before the vertical 90• is taking away a lot of my air flow. I'm thinking I'll straighten that up first, if that doesn't work then I'll try I stronger fan. Was given a small 12v squirrel cage fan. Won't be hard to run a simple test with that without too many modifications with all the slip fit connections I have. Does anyone have any air supply advice? Thanks in advance , Pancho
  11. A while back the touch mark that I had mad crumbled. Pretty sure that 1 I heat treated incorrectly and 2 I shouldn't have bothered heat treating at all. This is what I had and what I need to recreate. The first one was a two part mark because I could get a file into the trouble area reliably. My question is does anyone think that I might have better luck trying to cut it with a hot chisel and or has anyone ever hot chiseled their touch mark? Should I attempt it? I know that it would probably be more difficult, possibly be more tedious with the reheating and putting in the vise and redused work window, or probably be risking more burns on my hands. I know it would mean making another tool but I can already see a use for the chisel in the future. I would appreciate advise from someone who have tried something similar and either has a " it works your on the right track" or " your an idiot, do not try that you will be wasting your time and you will hurt yourself". Thanks in advance, Pancho
  12. Ok, thought I had seen on here recently the ones with the screws called pipe tongs, maybe I miss remembered. Still think it's a good gift.
  13. My wife's grandfather Wes has a welding shop, years ago when his father in law passed away Wes' son bought these tongs at the estate sale, and they have sat in the shelf ever since. Some of these are frozen up, which can be fixed, some I don't see a use for though I'll keep them, and some are just odd. These strike me more as salad tongs than forging tongs. Some of the jaws are fairly beat up and may need some repair, these are alittle thin.
  14. It probably could work but it's not quite the shape I'm lookin for
  15. I could get the wood burning good but I think I was just choking off the airway once I put coal in.
  16. That is a possibility, it actually smooths out as it heats up but it's the least of the problems at the moment
  17. Well something isn't working right, don't know whether I need a bigger blower or different air pipe but I can't get a fire going in it.
  18. I wasn't thinking when I cut the hole and used oxy acetelyne torch instead of plasma torch or a cutoff wheel. I would agree with the pipe, it probably won't work the best but it's what I had. It can always be changed later.
  19. Well I haven't tested it yet but I'm going to call it good now. I ended up using scrap angle iron for the rails till I can find/ build something better.
  20. home stretch, just wish there wasn't a warp around the pot
  21. Spose I probably walked into that one. How exactly would the shoe for a caprine equine differ from standard equus footwear? or is it the same but you charge a dollar more?
  22. It's about 4 inches deep and 12 1/2 x 10. Rail around the table and pot just haven't been put on yet.
  23. Still needs some work but my new forge is coming along well I think. It isn't as square as I'd like but I think it will work well enough and if it doesn't spouse I can tweak till destruction.
