But if I do make knives out of RR spikes, wouldn't i need some kind of coating to prevent the steel from rusting since its not stainless?

Hello everyone ! Now that I have everything to start forging, I wanted to know something. I know theres alot of people making railroad spikes knives but I was wondering if railroad steel is good enough for kitchen use (I know it is for general use). I don't know anything about type of steel and grade of steel so i was wondering if I could start off with that. (before making knives ill first try something easier)

Im currently in school doing a DEP (that's how it's called here in montreal) to be a electromechanical engineer and we had a 60h module on welding and cutting with acethylene but they didn't really explain to us in detail about safety using those equipement, it was juste like "dont do this, this, and this or you will blow us all up and that's it." Thanks everyone for the replies ! I learned so much from you people about acethylene and safety ! Im new to blacksmithing and forge so I need to be like a sponge and take every bit of knowledge that's available on this website. So I just need to get a regulator and then I can fully open my tank and control the flow with the regulator and everything will be safe ? CRANKY I also don't want to get exothermically disassociated so i'll listen to everyone here. But do I really need a regulator? because couldn't I just put a (its called valve anti-retour in french) valve that protect from backfire on the entry of the fuel pipe? Because technically, a regulator is used to adjust the amount of propane you throw in the burner but can't I just adjust everything from the opening of my propane tank no? (im new in blacksmithing so if you can explain why the use of a regulator is important, explain it to me please.)

Hey, it's been awhile since ive logged in to this website ! (busy lately with school and other stuff) but I finally managed to complete my propane forge and made my own burner ! (was going to buy one but made one instead for 10$ instead of 120) The only thing i was wondering is, i know i need a regulator hooked up to my propane tank but will the regulator protect the tank from backfire and if not, what could i buy to not get backfire. I tested my forge with the burner directly hooked up to my propane tank just for this time but i dont wanna take the risk or blowing myself up. And also, I wanna know wich regulator you guys are using and where can I order one. (I have a 60$ budget for a regulator)

I can't remember wich type of cement i used but my father is a chemist who makes em where he works. He told me to only use that one because it was safe.

Hey Frosty, when i made my forge, i simply used a paint can with cement and reinforced the cement with a piece of steel thing (dunno what its called but its for reinforcing the cement) and i did the hole for a burner. I was wondering if it could cool down or have a negative effect on my heat and if i also need ceramic blanket to keep the oxygen away from the burner hole.

I can't respond on the old thread :'( to Frosty and Michael.bell Oh xxxx Frosty, i just saw that you live in Alaska ! But yeah I live in Montreal and there's laws that restrain me from having a coal forge in my backyard... Wich sucks because i think building a coal forge is much easier and also finding the materials is less complicated. Maybe im having a hard time with finding the materials for a T burner because im french and my brain wont function properly lol.

No its just that where i live, the weather gets messy during the winter, and i can't forge inside my house.

Dang ! ill probably just buy either a weed burner or this https://buytools.ca/eng/self-igniting-hosed-torch-bt8385-4122.html This torch can go so 2500F so its not that bad but i just wonder if the tip is big enough.

Frosty, ive been searching for the plans of your T burner but i can't find them, can you help me ?

i got a hose for my 20lb tank today but i was wondering if i need to also get a regulator and wich torch i should use. I tried to find some detailed video or plan on how to make a propane burner but i can't find any.

I tried to heat my forge with a 1lb propane tank WITH the small torch but it wasn't hot enough, around 700-800c.... not enough to forge but i dont know if if just need a new torch OR just try it with a 20lb tank + hose.

Hi, im a beginner blacksmith, and i wanted to know if it was possible to use a simple 1lb torch head with a hose directly in a 20lb propane tank to heat up a small homemade paint container forge.
