I was the fat kid, with his nose stuck in a book.
I don't think school was fun for anyone.
Only the filter of time makes it seem so .....

At the end of you day when you buy it, think of it as the start of the collection

ive got access to various angle iron sections so i can bend them ( either opening or closing the angle). thought some seamless scaffold pole might go into it. i was thinking about a bowl shape but have no idea how id do that bit yet.
Ill keep your odds and ends in mind though. :)

Im thinking of attempting to make a swage block. For no other reason than I'd like one.
I have seen a page on another site showing the basic method of this. Hot link to " other site " removed
Is there anything you would add to this or change?

At the risk of sounding a bit Oliver Twist, I don't think I can specify what variant of mild steel my supplier delivers to me, I think you get what you're given. Although I know very little about the steel business my assumption is that most of the big suppliers will get their steel from a variety of mills around Europe, then it all gets jumbled up on their racks. Perhaps I should be a bit more picky about who I buy from.
Have you tried Brundles? They have the spec number besides the steel as you look for what you want. Pretty cheap too.

If i was you. Id look around for another anvil. Notown is spot on. don't spend lots on what you can get cheaper. I was living on an island and managed to pick up a 300lb one for £100. The anvil looks in great condition and I'll presume it rings well. But do you really wanna spend that amount of cash on 1 tool? From the picture I see horse shoes so there must be horses around the area. Which means there will be retired farriers and other blacksmiths. They might be able to help you find a cheaper one. Also do you need an anvil as heavy as that? if so then maybe look on craigslist or ebay for ones near you that are cheaper.

FC what you could try is using a piece of flexible hose to connect the dryer and the forge. you could then cut a slit in it and use a bit of cardboard or thin sheet as a slide to regulate the airflow or use a bit of firm pipe and cut a hole in it and use a bit of cardboard to make a collar you can slide over the hole to control air lost.

ID informs me that he may have some nice blowers up for grabs at a reasonable price

Post it to scotland Ill give it a nice home

Finally tried out the bouncy castle blower.
Lots of duct tape and a mixing bowl were sacrificed in the making of this.
IronDwarf your air control works a treat as we knew it would.
Thanks for all the ideas you guys gave me.

ID Ill pass on the 30 tonnes.. Though at this rate you might get another visit when I have to drive to englandshire to get some.
-
not yet I only listed it as i noticed it was cheaper than the last one i posted. The only down side to this is that they ask for a minimum of 1 tonne per order.. thats a lot of coke to burn through.

Found a cheaper supply http://www.nationalcoal.co.uk/buy-coal-from-national-coal/coal/pet-coke-doubles 290 for 40*25kg pet doubles

calling up a steel yard is also a good place to get beginner materials, the owner or person in charge will always be glad to sell you drops.
WHat exactly is a drop?
Is it the steel thats missed the mould and hit the floor?
-
in that case I can sell you forged bars of unobtainium
unobtainium is stronger than hellium, and lighter than airium
im not sure if this would work for you but I'm sure unaffordium would do the job you need to do
I have some drops out the back of beyond
if you need I can measure them
Can i have to bits of string lengths by about that much width?
Oh and can you make it about so thick?
-
Dont worry about the cut.. few months and you'll ignore it and keep on forging.
Welcome to IFI new blood is always welcome.Like frosty said a hair dryer is a great cheap blower just get rid of the heat setting.
A small prayer to Vulcan might help bring better omens.

A Jim Blurton in that condition would be worth a bit of coin to the local farriers if you aren't going to use it. Just a thought.
Only cost about £56GBP here about 90 usd i think

Found out its a Jim Blurton 2lbs turning hammer.
