I finally found a blower for my forge. If it works. Its a 16 amp blower though and looks like it needs a good clean out as it has grass in it. I got it from the bouncy castle guys at our last bike rally. It looks like this one in the pic

Ive just read this and now im a bit paranoid. When i was younger i worked in a steel mill and part of the job was cutting galvi sheet steel and making various little slots and slits. I used to come home dirtier that an dirty thing on a dirty things dirty day. Should i be worried. this was 30 years back though.

Take a hammer or a ball with you

They put a 3 legged clamp around one of your front wheels so you cant drive the car and you have to pay to get them removed. they also have a thick plate cover over the wheel nuts so you cant just swap over the wheel. small geni and a decent grinder takes ages to remove one ( so Ive been told)

Frosty Maybe it would be an idea to ask metalmangler to make a tongs forging video?
Perhaps a whole new section to the site of How To Videos??

Haha and to think I complain of the heat. when it gets to about 24C (about 75F) I start to hide. No idea how you guys can handle the heat.

I live in a town in a ground floor flat but I have the garden. I dont care what my neighbours think. They party during the week regularly and dont give my boy trying to sleep a thought. So im more than happy to go out in the morning ona day off and beat steel. My anvil sits on pallets so the sound can resonate a little but its the right height for me.
When I move home itll be a different story and ill sound proof the anvil. -
I paid £100 for my 300 pounder. though there is a guy here with a beautiful 300 pounder in almost new condition wants 450 for it

Looks good.Do you put felt pads on it too?

Buy up what you can afford they are 20 year old prices!
Ebay for instance list 1000mm 40 x 40 at £20 plus £10 carriage.
Alan
Ill buy what i can over here then mind that meter of bright 13/4 cost me 50 quid. but when i move up ill be making 2 trips as i have to come back for my bikes.. might be able to buy up stuff for uk ebay myself haha
MInd you its only cheaper cos we dont pay vat here
-
Blimey where did you buy your steel?
I thought it sounded like a good price...
I just checked on Parkersteel website and for a 6-6.4metre length they want £85 plus £35 delivery plus VAT which comes to £144 .
The premium they want for for 2metres is eye-watering…£101.42 that is then plus Delivery and VAT...over £160 for a third of the material!
So no, you are definitely not paying too much…again where from? What do they charge for a full length?

Got the 40mm square bar. The idea is it should fit the hardy. One problem. I didn't realise how long 2meters is. For a noob like me. Its huge. So lots of stock now. Buying no more for a while.

I spoke to steve sells a few days about a book.
-
ordered a new book today.

It is sold by weight by a steel stockholder. But if you are not buying 6.1 metre (20') random lengths you are liable for all sorts of cutting and shipping charges on top.
Alan
Thats a handy thing to know Alan. I can buy steel to be imported here without a cutting charge. But knowing that might save me a few quid back in the UK.

Ive had a good look through that but I prefer a book in my hands to a screen when it comes to reading.

charles i use a 7 pound hammer my problem before was lack of heat and lack of knowledge i have the ability to make the heat now (stuid ash gate). So when I get a chance ill have a good attempt at breaking the stuff

Gergely. I bought the 1 3/4" with the plans at trying to reduce it to 1 1/2" as thats the size of my hardie hole. The reason I'm buying the 40 mm is to draw it out a little so its fits the hardie then I can weld on to it. But as you said that big stuff is a huge buzz kill. One day though Ill master it and then might be able to use it. For now I chalk it up to a noob mistake. For now though I'm playing around with 1/2" coil and some old leaf springs I've been given:~)
