    steel

pssst news flash. japanese blades are mix tempered. the quality of japenese steel in that day was very difficult to control which is why they are folded the way they are, to make the carbon content consistant throughout the blade.
  11. yes he has drawn it up. look towards the bottom of the page
  12. Look here http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/oilburners10.html there's a plan on the page. I haven't actually built one yet, but they guy claims it can melt steel. I suppose you would build a forge around it the same way you would build a gas forge.

    Track Stand

Just something I'm getting ready to hobble together. I welcome any opinions.
  16. haven't looked around for a source yet, but brass melts at around 1800 deg F. WARNING: brass is a copper/zinc alloy. nasty fumes! if you are going to risk doing this drink plenty of milk both before and after. also try to keep a lid on the crucible to hold the zinc in or you're going to be poring copper. people have cast brass in plaster so that shouldn't be a problem, just make sure that your mold is bone dry. Lost wax would be best.
  17. Should probably mention that the pattern wasn't my own. I bought Jim Furgason's pattern E-Book, and I'm going through it one blade at a time. when I'm comfortable with that I'll try to design some of my own.
