  1. This is why it is so valuable to be able to build new or restore old tools that are not on the market as new.

    Göte

indeed, that was a goal when i got started, to eventually learn the skills to make whatever tool i wanted/needed instead of speeding the money on over priced specialty tools, as im sure alot of people on here got into it.

  2. I dont know if it is particularly important, besides the fact that we are all keeping it from becoming a lost art, and passing along the skill, and showing the possibilities to on looker. It is a good thing, in that it teaches you to look at things with new light in more creative ways, to break from the box that we sometimes see things through, its about seeing a problem and finding creative solutions to achieve a goal, so in that it is an important skill, and the thought process can be taken to any area of life.

  3. Try it all ways, and decide what is comfortable for you.

Im with njanvilman, use it upside down, if it is more comfortable for you! no right or wrong way, just a right or left way, all personal preference, i usually set my anvil to the right or left of my  forge, horn pointing to my left, making an L but then i can go to the far side of the anvil if i want to change directions for workin on the horn, but it makes no differnce if your comfortable working on it.

  4. Nice vice! great ingenuity, i dont see many problems with as long as the welds are solid, maybe looking for a better screw, but your already on that idea. but well done, hope it works out well for you until you can upgrade, but it certainly get you going, im on the hunt for one once i have some cash in hand, hopefully before i break my bench vise!!!

  5. im with them, return it, explain why you did, and you appreciate the thought behind the present but it will not last very long as an anvil and hit some scrapyards/salvage yards and find yourself a nice hunk of steel to use, big sledge hammer heads, rr track, i beam on end with a thick plate welded on it, theres someone in the tailgating section selling a large peice of steel. all will work better and take muc more abuse, may just have to grind some blemishes every once in while or look into heat treating it, but even un treated steel will work better and last much longer.

  6.   OK....my bad.....I see your point...... If I could rephrase the original post I would.

I am definitely not working out of a cardboard box here guys. I like what I got and I ain't complaining about none of it. If thats the way I came across then Im sorry.

That being said I still got to move my stuff into the open to be able to use it and would love to get some good Ideas from the guys that have been doing this a lot longer than me. ;)

get your self a good hand truck, can find em cheap, now i just need to take my own advice and stop breaking my back.

  7. Welcome Marius, i too share your interest in learning to make woodworking tools to avoid paying the high prices of modern brand hand tools, or having to search high and low for what i am currently seeking, get some basics down and you will have any tool you want, actually my first project for the day will be forging a new drawknife out of a farriers rasp. Your absolutely correct, there is a gold mine of info on here ( Or is it Iron Mine). Welcome to your new addiction, you have found a great support group!

  8. Welcome Robbie, you should look up the MABA ( Michigan Artists blacksmith association) i believe they are having a meeting this coming weekend, good way to meet people in the surrounding areas. IFI is full of excellent info, just have to dig a little bit as some of it gets burried because of the volume on here, there is alot of info on forge design in the section under general blacksmithing as well as in the blueprints section. If you cant find your answer after some searching, im sure someone will be able to point you in the direction or answer your questions for you.
