  1. Location: Yesteryear Forge 15421 Five Forks Rd. Amelia VA 23002 Time: 9am-4pm Lunch: Provided with $5.00 Donation Date: July 19th 2008 Demonstrator: Doug Merkel Topic: Doug will be doing a very special demonstration in honor of the late Doug "DR. Iron" Henderickson. The demonstration will be Fry pans, forks, ladles, choppers, etc. as Mr. Henderickson used to demo. He lost his life to a prolonged battle to ALS but never lost his love or passion for blacksmithing and his students. Doug Merkel will be keeping his spirit alive at the anvil where he knew "Dr. Iron" would always want to be remembered. There will be an area for tailgaters to come and set up! Also there will be a huge IRON IN THE HAT with all proceeds going back to help ABANA fund the upcoming 2010 Conference. This is FREE to attend and enjoy the day with us. We do ask that you strongly consider participating in the Iron in the Hat not only for the funding, but to keep the tradition going of sharing tools, forged items, and other useful things around the shop! Tom Clark contacted me to let me know the following: "I am sending you two pair of Tom Tongs and a hot cut hardie, this is a true hot cut (most hot cuts available are actually cold cutters) made of 5160 and the cutting edge is heat treated..." for our Iron in the Hat! There will also be at least 3 Board Members there for you to talk to and ask any questions.... This is not limited to ABANA members, or any guild. If you have an interest then you are MORE than welcome to come and be a part of such a special demonstration and day of great fellowship! If anyone would like to send in anything for the Iron in the Hat here is the guild office address: Blacksmith Guild of Virginia 309 Second Avenue Farmville Virginia 23901 I certainly hope to see you all there! PLEASE RSVP HERE OR BY PM OR EMAIL OR PHONE! WE NEED A HEAD COUNT FOR LUNCH ASAP!! Peyton president@blacksmithguildofva.com 434.390.6203
  2. THIS JUST IN..... 3. I forgot to mention we will be attempting to get the webcam up and running just like we do for our meetings. I think this go round we will call it: "ABANA-VISION"
  4. Kevin unfortunately the cut off date has past to reach the 20 for the demonstrator... I am glad to hear the OBG got theirs! I know of a few other who did also. That is Great! Peyton
  5. That is one of the reasons there is no gate fee. In these times our money can be pourd into other places... A year or so ago I could charge a gate fee and you would spend the same amount of money you would today without one due to the cost of fuel. We are trying to keep it as affordable as possible so anyone can attend. Come on up. There is a nice hotel less than 5 miles from the forge! Peyton
  6. Background: Earlier this year the ABANA Board put in place a membership drive for the affiliates. Any affiliate to gain 20+ new or renewed members got a free demo. Well, The Blacksmith Guild of Virginia got its 20+ and will be holding a special event on July 19 for ALL BLACKSMITHS!!!!!! 7. Thomas. Thank You! My post had been somewhat edited due to some potential guideline infractions on my part. I get excited...a lot of times possibly too excited. About the CD. The CD offer was a limited time membership drive incentive item within a certain window of time. By BAM the time had past. I hope we can eventually get that CD back into an offering of some sort. Thanks all. Peyton
  8. ABANA is working hard to get back to the core importance of the organization. I can tell you that the Board members are working hard to provide its membership with opportunities that can benefit them. Your membership is already doing some things for you...too much to list Over the years there have been a lot of changes that come along with different Board member personalities and leadership. But this is every organization. ABANA is no different. I am lucky and honored to be a current member on the ABANA Board of Directors. I am listening, so are the other 14 members. So, please drop me a line if I can be of any help to you or anyone else here. To me, ABANA is not the Artist, or the Beginner, or the Traditionalists, or any other facet. WE are blacksmithing. And WE are ABANA. We are only as strong as our membership, and you joining the cause makes things one more strong towards this. Thank you! 13. Not as of yet. There is still a lot we are expecting to do with these video streams. The first thing is to get the picture quality and sound quality as good as we can. Right now we are using a security camera that has its limitations. I hope down the road we can get this thing where I can burn DVDs and upload to the internet for everyon to enjoy and learn from. Peyton
  14. Yeah it is Eastern Standard Time...sorry about that. Peyton
  15. The webcam runs on the 3rd Saturday of each month. This is our monthly guild meeting time. The webcam is usually up around 9am or so and runs throughout the day until the demo is over. This is EST time...so you will need to adjust. Go here to see our calendar of dates and demonstrators. Blacksmith Guild of Viriginia Peyton
  16. Email coming your way with his stuff... :-) Peyton
  17. Don That is what I am looking for right there! Awesome job. Very simple design that is well executed and able to function. Thanks for posting it... Peyton
  18. I really appreciate all the comments about the webcam. The credit for this needs to go to two people: 1. Mike "yesteryearforge" Tanner. He had the idea and got the ball rolling. 2. Adam Russell. He stepped in and made this work when everyone said it could not happen. (it is actually a wireless feed from the shop about 100+ feet to the house...then to the host site: camstreams.com, then out to you guys) His understanding and imagination keeps you guys out there connected. The goal of The Blacksmith Guild of Virginia is to make as many learning opportunities available to as many people as possible. This is just one more way to reach out to those who may need, or want the opportunity. We are discussing and looking into improvements down the road. Right now we are using a security camera, my guitar amp, and Mike's laptop. I think on down the road it will all get better as we can find and use better "stuff". We are on the threshold waiting for better technology at something we can use in this setting. I am prod to be a part of something so fun! Thanks. Peyton
  19. Jr. That is how I want to do it. I want it very simple but usable. Our guild has an upcoming trade item that is a forged tool...so I thought this would be a good lesson for me on a lot of different levels. I want to make as much of it as possible...except for the blade. I want it to be as few pieces as possible and nothing really ornate. Simple and Usable is where I want to go with this. Maybe even based off of an antique??...??? Don't know. But I am determined to start on it this Saturday during the "Blacksmith Day" event thing going on at Mike's shop through Antracit... http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/blacksmith-day-may-24-th-2008-a-5864/ Thanks for all the help so far guys..keep it coming. I need all the help I can get! LOL! Peyton
  20. Don. That would be MOST helpful!! Thanks to you too Richard... Peyton
  21. Anyone out there have any information or photos of any hand forged hacksaw frames? I am beginning to think through one and would like to see some examples or read up on what others have done... I think I am going to order the back issue of Blacksmiths Journal on it too... Thanks. Peyton
  22. it is offline. I only open the portal when we have our meeting, which is the 3rd Saturday of every month... Peyton
  23. Here is a link to the live webcast for our monthly meeting. The morning session is Lynda Metcalfe Afternoon session is Elmer Roush Enjoy! yesteryearforge - Live Webcam with Free Chat Peyton
  24. I just wanted to let everyone know that there are still a few open "seats" in this class. We would love to have come and be a part of the Yesteryear School experience with two of the best instructors in the country for chasing and treadle hammer work. I have spoken to several people who took this exact class offering at John C. Campbell and LOVED IT! And this time around it is over HALF THE PRICE! $225.00 USD for a class that usually runs close to 500 bucks! Please let me know if you have any questions. I am happy to help answer them! Peyton Yesteryear School of Blacksmithing yesteryearschool@gmail.com
  25. Not to worry. We always shoot our meetings live over the internet! :-) The demo items will be: Lynda: Wall sconce or door knocker Elmer: pair of pliers or adze :-) Peyton
