  5. you can use borax to protect the steel and flux the weld:)
  6. when you heat the metal does it get yellow hot and give off tiny sparks........that is the max temp range you will need you could add a few firebricks to help contain the heat on three sides. the slow heat is to ensure the interior of the stack is as hot as the outside thinking pattern welding here for blades
  7. what kind of SS ?? welded ?? are you near the ocean ?? also is it polished or rough ??
  8. the high magnetic field induces and electric current in a metallic object whether ferrous or not. it is really an AC magnetic field and it switches back and forth in polarity it wont work with DC except for one initial pulse
  9. high current in the heating coil creates a very strong magnetic field this field in turn produces high electrical current in the piece to be heated...like a reverse electric magnet. the hi current flow in the work piece heats it up just like running current thru an electric heater.
  10. high carbon steel: simple ones like 1080 or 1090 or tool steels like o1 w1 a2 etc
  11. 420V is available at www.mcmaster.com nickel and high carbon give great contrast
  12. uvex makes several lens that adsorb 75% to 95% of the IR. see http://www.uvex.us/uploadedFiles/Company/FAQ/Maintenance/UvexLensTechnology.pdf near the end cobalt infra dur shade 3.0 and 5.0 they make them in a flip up configuration called uvex horizontal flip up this seems to me to offer at great deal of protection for about $30. they will also serve as safety glasses and fit over many prescription frames. has anybody tried these ??? comments ???
  13. you will fill any space you build........go for the biggest space you can afford or build with expansion in mind
  14. most of the time due to radiant heat and forge fleas
  15. vascowear was made by teledyne metals try crucible metals cruwear http://www.crucibleservice.com/datash/dscruwearv5b.pdf?CFID=185017&CFTOKEN=59781645
  16. the table i found shows 300 series 440c and a couple of ph grades all to be about the same at 20C http://www.euro-inox.org/pdf/map/Tables_TechnicalProperties_EN.pdf around page 15 on
  17. thanks i thought i might be on the do not reply list:) seems like it would help anywhere the heat gets sucked out by the tooling and you dont need points or edges to hold up.
