  1. I never said it was accurate, just a probable kind of steel that you might find.
  2. If you are cheap like me, go to an auto salvage yard. here is your guide. (not great quality) The one somewhere on this site is just a wall of text. maybe i'll compile it into excel or something.

  5. After burning, my coal looks like charcoal, cracked and split. is this coke?
  6. So, what I have gathered so far is that damp= soaked throughout. On my last experiment, I sprinkled a little water on top of dry coal and it... Exploded. A piece hit my glasses. (Wear them). So, soak through, or just the outside, like running it over a hose. While the fire is going, put water on the coal?
  7. Every single "Coal forge upkeep" article i have read says to keep the coal damp. That's it. I need to know, how damp is damp? all the way through? On top of the fire? distance? etc etc. I am using Bituminous coal BTW. thanks in advance!
  8. saw a 2 ton power hammer maintain heat on a piece for a few minutes. several inches thick
  9. I would love to make a damascus hammer. (no folding, just weld, cut, stack, weld, repeat) I would use it too :D

  11. That's why there are doors on the ends. I can slide it in on top of a bed of coals. It will be solid coal in the trough practically.
  12. with this, all the clinker will just slide to the bottom and into a box underneath rather than clogging the air flow which will be 1/3 of the way off the bottom. hopefully
  13. I use a very, very dirty coal. however, i can get it for $10.00 per 100#. So, brake drum forge does not work, clinker clogs the grate in minutes. so, without further adieu, the Trough style 55 side blast with chimney. Thoughts? ideas? suggestions? also, for updates about the building of this, check my blog in the blogs area, Toolception; Claw to peen. Thanks! click on the image to zoom in. thumbnail is quite small
  14. I was thinking about drilling holes in the T joint where the lower cap screws on, depending how far I open it, more or less air. Thoughts?
  15. An air leak? Interesting. I thought he meant a valve. I'll try that. Thanks AGAIN for the ideas
  16. The last time I restricted the airflow my hairdryer burst into flames :/ I think I'll just find a bid about dimmer switches.
  17. Thanks. Does anyone have a link on how to put a dimmer switch on a hairdryer?
  18. Thanks. Grated bottom, charcoal, hairdryer.
  19. I recently finished my brake drum forge (can't get ahold of 50g drum) and it shoots sparks like a volcano, hence the nickname mt. Krakatoa. Does anyone know how to stop this?
  20. Well, I see that it isn't worth the risk. Thanks for the info everyone! Glad that I can find an active troll free community ^_^

    Beveling

Hi everyone, second day of smithing... Sort of. Can I get a short tutorial on how to hammer a bevel? I don't want to grind too much and lose density in the metal. Thanks!
  22. First, Hi :3 second, when I put a bolt in my forge, it changes color with a yellow coating on it. Should I be afraid? Thanks.
