  1. If you ae looking for a good supplier try AKS
  2. I prefer tru grit myself but where doesn't matter as much as what kind. Remember the old saying "you get exactly what you pay for!" and it sure holds true for belts.
  3. Ed that is a truly nice looking hammer. It will give you many years of pleasure. Keep on hammerin'.
  4. You will like the KMG. I have one and Robs horiz. grinder also. Great tools! I have a 2 HP DC w/ controller on mine. I am going to start going w/ VFD's on future tooling I think. plain ol Bill Bill's Blades Home
  5. 1080 & 15N20 is my choice. Makes a great blade and contrasts nicely. Close enough chemically so it welds up nicely w/o problems.
  6. 160 layers 1080 & 15N20. Light, quick, well balanced. Updated my web site w/ my latest creations. Bill's Blades Home
  7. Here are some pics of the latest little guy. If I remember right there are 220 layers of 1080 & 15N20. I thought the pattern was interesting.
  8. Mike I make all my own damascus. Very seldom do I work with plain steel anymore. Damascus is addicting and it is like opening a present every time you etch one because each piece is distinctive. I'll try to get a shot of the file work tomorrow and put it up. I have a shop tour page on my web site if you woiuld like to visit. Bill's Blades Home
  9. I have a couple of those 164 blowers from Centaur. Love them!
  10. Sambar stag scales. Damascus blades, fileworked spines and tapered tangs. This is my first time to work w/ stag - love the look and feel, hate the smell of sading it (ugh). This style and size is the most popular knife I make.
  11. Uri if you read this please contact me. The email address I have for you keeps bouncing back and I need to get some $$ to you.
  12. I like blown forges. Quieter, more control, hotter, faster. I have three different forges - all blown - works for me in my shop.
  13. I have used torches all my life just about. Used them all and hands down I like the Victor brand. Get the combination torch so you can use welding tips w/ the handle. You can go all the way down to a 000 size for pin point flame up to great big ones for welding or heating. You can get a Victor serviced just about anywhere and find tips easily.
  14. I use only stabilized on my knives. Tried doing it myself, just not happy w/ the results versus commercial vendors. The best I have used came from WSSI. I send my wood to them and get it back in a few weeks all done. No muss, no fuss that way and it is done right. Wood Stabilizing Specialists, Int'l., LLC | Product Overview
  15. That must be an old picture - it doesn't look like Don Fogg.
  16. My compressor is putting out 17 CFM @ 90 PSI so I have not run into any air problems. Unless you know for a fact that your air is DRY - DRY - DRY put a coalescing (toilet paper type) filter in line just before you enter the plasma. It will be money well spent as a tiny (itty bitty little thing) water droplet will ruin consumables in a hurry. I have an Esab 550I and love it!
  17. 5 lb. of coal, 4 1/2 lb. of clinker! Trying to find dcent coal around here at a decent price is why I went to gassers.
  18. What in the world? anyone seen a critter like this one before? I'm wondering if it is cut off or is the base just covered up?? Its coming up for auction in about a week.
  19. Here is one from a really nasty piece of wire rope. I will take this one and give it to the forman at the local logging supply store. They have had folks get cable from them before but they never brought anything back to show them what they made from the pieces given them. I figure giving them this one will likely ensure me a lifetime supply of cable.
  20. It's a seller Richard. I am asking $275 for this one. I hesitate to put a price up on the forum without knowing the policy about it. I will post some more pics of different knives as I get them finished up. I have one w/ sheephorn scales I might get a picture of tomorrow. My website is www.billsblades.com if you would like take a peek --.
  21. Will see if I can mess up trying to get a pic on here of a hunter I finished off this week.
  22. Personally I like a full 2 HP motor on my grinders. You can get by w/ a 1 1/2 HP but dont go lower than that.
  23. I think most knife makers would agee the cadillac of the grinders available are made by Rob Frink. His KMG grinders can be seen at www.beaumontmetalworks.com I have a couple of them, and a homemade also. Grizzly makes a good entry level machine, lots of knives get made on them.
  24. Neat idea and good looking work! You're right there are a LOT of woodworkers out there and I don't remember seeing a hold down like that unless you went to a specialty type store. How thick is the hold down foot (looks like about 3/16 - 1/4")
  25. I generally use a drill motor and fine wheel for sharpening mine with the grind marks in line w/ the tungsten body. But when humped up back in a tight hole I've often used a 4 1/2" grinder spinning it manually. It works - and you just need a point. Only time I have ever really noticed a difference is when welding really thin material on low amps.
