  1. Well I quit it . Deednt get enough temperature today and I guess I will stick to lighter one. I will use this piece for other project but it's really time and fuel consuming
  2. Well I guess you are right guys but Ian really thinking of making hot set vchisel from this piece . I like to have it on wooden handle I know it will be ugly shaped but maybe worth trying. I know I will lost lots of fuel in process But i think od it as exercising.

    Buy those tongs?

Wolf jaw tongs i think I will pick only them for shipping but will se they are hardest to make but are versatile I think Like 25-30 dollars 25 euros Daswulf that's corr ct but buying 4 for 200 is worth like almost anvil. And I feel les like blacksmith if I buy tongs

    Buy those tongs?

For 4 pieces it's expensive even for USA standards?
  5. Previouslz i made small chiping hammer by stick welding two pieces of rod . and it was realy light. I think heavyer wont be that issue. I planed to squish one side that's why i was hammmering it and other to make like chisel correct I might have issues with cuting out stock to big and massive and having it later to suprise me how it spread bigger than i itended. It is not first time. Even if it dont end well for welding maaybe it will be good hot chisiel or even twybil Aand one thing to add i had previously drilled hole by factory and i put rebar there and welded it to hold it. So i wanted to use that hole (wich was drilled before as eye) and just elargen it. This project will be expensive (in charcoal time but iits good exercise) dont know does it worth and how it will end up. but good thing about forging is that you can almost allways reforge things in other shape compared to woodworking wich is imposible to reshape material.

    Buy those tongs?

Should i buy those tongs i feel like iam cheating a bit, i had made one tongs wich are a litle bit thin and akward. Are those tongs good to start with. I think cheaper for me is to buy those and study them then to try buy big rod and forge it. Last time i didnt find enaugh thick rod to forge out of it. When i asked seller he said they are 100 euros around 120 dollars 4 pieces. For our standard its expensive. One solid anvil is like 200 euros. Well i tough they will be cheaper. I will have to gather some material to forge it then.
  7. Well i think its thick about 1 inch or litle bit more iam not sure and its wide 4 inches. Iam planing to make welder chiping hammer but i wanted to eye look litle bit thicker. Your idea is good but it would be to heavy now its heavy a bit to be honest for chiping hammer iam planing to forge it something like this. Thats what i tought it will be one step foward "two step back" and i didnt rotated 90 deg i tought i will just shape it in back position if you know what i mean so it can be done to get thicknes and get rid of ( in same time. Good thing is its is high carbon steel and it allow me to work it in litle bit brighter to orange color (cant get yellow out of this thick piece) or i dont know how , however that is different subject but it can be done. I did experiment this is frist time that i try to forge thick piece as this. And someone asked for power hammer , i dont have those or fly press even if i had i wont be able to store it.
  8. So what will happen if I continue pounding this head , I want it to be thicker but I have con it starting mushrooming having u shape Ita will be ugly welder hammer I think this canrt be resolved
  9. Who cares its bigg enaugh for working and if its not cracked and have good rebound as thomas said. I red in old book that anvil should be at least 8 to 10 times heavier than hammer and on this note you win.
  10. Ian planing to make welder's hammer out of leaf spring I have one issue it is wide enough but not thick right dimension. How you folks thicken piece of metal without bending corners aqwardly in, ita like upsetting bus perpendicular . How does one achieve it?
  11. One i bought couple months a go other I forged i needed smaller one .
  12. I noticed that it is faster to drill with hand crank drill than electric one. Lol . Because of overheating.
  13. Frosty i used to work with mild steel and even grinder disc was "telling" me it will be tough, you can run out of small discs in seconds when you cut it, thats why i have "axe" now that i will use to cut hot steel wich is slower process if it is not heated enaugh. I made that axe using old axe head and welded some leaf spring to it. I think it is strong enaugh to work, hey it can cut nails on anvil and i think it stay in good edge shape . Thats how that steel is hard (or i quenched it a good) still heat treatment is hocus pocus for me if do it good i did it by luck. In theory i know how its done but practice is something else. Call me lazy but i used arc /rod welder and drilled some a litle bit unacurete rod and one tip too, you can use old electrode "done that in school" to make rivet out of it it is not that strong but its easy to be shaped instead using nail or forging brand new rivet out of new material. I cant remember what we build but we used that for something small. Maybe I am not best craftsman but sometimes i just want things to be done in shorcut , and sometimes i want to do it slowely it depend on mood i guess.
  14. Wich one , melting it with electrode ?
  15. Maybe my mistake or lets say disadvantage is that i use regular hand drill instead of drill press. Maybe i dotn have enaugh preassure to drill steel in first place? When we were at school it was so easier to drill metal using drill press than comparing to this drill that you need lean on it to dirll (sometimes i even break bits. If nothing will help i would have to make small punch for that hole and punch it out hot, i have center punch that i bought but i feel like i will ruin it temper if i try it on hot steel (to punch out hole) And if i choose this way of "punching out hole" drifting or how its called i know i will deform handle a bit, it wont be precise and i will have to make thin piece of round steel welded or fastened somehow so it dont transfer heat to hand while i drift it. Anvil good idea i forgot that i can even melt down with rod and enaugh amparage that hole..
  16. Everything is finnihed i mean about heat treat. Knife made from leaf spring i think its is too hard to be drilled, can i skip again anealing or normalisation (i think i get good quality on blade) and doing that again heat treat might ruin it. Well question is how to drill that i tried and drilled 90 percent of one small hole and dril bitt wont come anymore deeper. And one question two how does temper travel trough blades. iam not still sure how it does horizontaly or verticaly, and what efect it, does it effect how you dip your blade in liquid (oil water) how will temper appear for example this screwdriver "chisel" or this knife well thats two questions. how to drill hardened steel and how does one control temper "moving" does it matter how you dip steel in quench.Well third one after i polish grind blade and put it in fire then quench it i have issues sometimes to see temper color becasue of scale that is blue grayish collor and it form. And if i will grind it i will loose temperature. Thanks
  17. Thanks I hope it will cut, just I have to anneal or normalise a handle a bit i can't drill it
  18. Yes it is 50 kilograms. I saw it on internet and it can be bought by "blind" only see it and take it becasue anvils are faar away.

    New vise stand

Thanks for advice , well i had it mounted on stump. issue was i wasnt able to even twist stuff in it now its have enaugh wideness. I had to make it a litle bit out of shape becasue doors i was walking in and it will get in way so it is like trapezoid shape because i had to save some space. One question is it safe to weld stuff in vise? I welded one threaded rod i needed it more lenght so i welded both threads.

    New vise stand

Here is how I build it I hope it's not too close to forge .
  21. And bellows moved 4 inches up where there were locat do. Lesson learned , don't always do stuff people tell you to do in internet. They were at attic but it was uncomfortable to work with , just was bad idea. Bellows moved to previous place just lifted up 10 cm or more 4 inches or like 6 .
  22. I saw this setup, i want to ask david are they hard to pull like in this setup ? Only with two pulleys and can pulleys be aranged differently?
