I made something similar to this for my future mother in law, only age wanted to be able to drape a king sized quilt over it. I ended uo using a 7' wooden dow rod app. 1" OD, I made two pretty brackets for it to rest in on either end, sanded the rod and stained and varnished it the color of her mantle, I then forges two nice tacks to go on either end of the rod. Looked great and she loved it, no sagging in the middle as of yet, but I did tell her to make sure the weight of the quilt was distibuted evenly.

Gents! My brother recently moved a couple states away from me, bought his dream home which happens to be a log cabin. Well my brother and I have been smithing together since highschool, and he begged me to take our fisher anvil and large forge with him to smith items for his new home. Being a family man, and since he has saves my butt on more than one occasion I felt obliged to let him take the items with him, now I have to set up our smaller forge we bought a few years back. This forge doesn't have a built in fire pot, kind of like a larger version of a rivet forge. it does have the cut out sides for long pieces, but I was trying to figure out how to make it work, work well that is. So yesterday I added a heat shield in front of the blower and I put refractory in the bottom and built it up to the tyre, now to create the fire pot should I simply use fire brick standing on their side or should I try to create a fire pot out of refractory? Any and all help is much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Thanks vaughn, I will do that tomorrow, I'm trying to enlist a strikers to help me out this week so I can get a couple fullers and a hotcut made out of axle......we will see how it goes ;) Haha

Finally got around to cutting a stump for the William foster, it is wild cherry anf weighs in at 130 pounds (for now, it was only cut down about a year ago) so all together it comes in right at 400# ! First thing I am going to forge on it are hold downs for it.

I figured I would braze it, but didn't know for sure, I have never messed with cast much so I didn't know if I heated it up pretty warm and hit it with the TIG with a little filler if that would work as well? Any and all thoughts would be helpful! Thanks in advance

That my friend is an amazing find! I have wanted one of those anvils for a while, just to look at more than anything lol, that should serve you well and it is a beautiful piece of history!

No Stuart the one I bought is rather large and freestanding, it puts out great air and I will try to get a pic on here this evening

Just picked up a large free standing Montgomery ward "heavy duty blast blower" good condition with the stand, does any one have any info on these are they decent blowers?

I have an old 4" post vise that my grandfather got out of an old plant here in my home town, I don't know if it was original or not but when I went through the vise cleaning it up after I put it in my shop the jaw plates looked very similar to those and they ended up being plug welded on, I didn't remove them but I figured if i ever had to I could just drill the welds out and either re-tap the vise jaws or plug weld new ones on. I don't know how welding them would effect the vise or the jaws but it has held up well for me over the past few years

Gentlemen, I picked up this tiny forge this morning, mostly to keep it out of the scrap yard and it has nice lines and is very pleasing to my eyes, would it be sacrilegious and would I be kicked off of the forum if I made a nice barnwood table top for it and turned it into a hallway table? Lol

I have all of the black metal pretty much where I want it now I just need to work my brass down to the proper rivet size, the only experience I have with brass is on a lathe or milling machine so I hope I don't ruin a pretty piece of metal ;)

My fisher is a nice anvil but this little peter wright seemed to move material so much quicker,needless to say, I'm keeping it!!! And I talked it over with the lady and she said that as long as I keep my "junk" out of the yard she doesn't care how many I have :) ....... She can be so understanding at times!

That is beautiful, I ran across a massive fisher the other day, a couple are using it as a display beside their mailbox, it is in perfect condition from what I could see from the road, I may go back this week and talk to him about it, really just to see how big it actually is. it looks good sitting where they have it, but would look better in someone's shop in my opinion. ;)

There is a guy down here in my neck of the woods selling a 120# soderforse for 250..... I don't need it but I did look at it and it is in good shape if any one is in my general area and is looking for one, he also said that he will take trades on "hunting" type items.

Tundra I love the texture in that piece, the green leaves are a great touch

Thanks for the input guys, it means a lot, I like the triangular rivets idea, and I didn't know that using a brass brush on the hot steel would leave some brass behind! I will definitely give that a try, and my stock size is 1/2 inch so I will be working it down to the desired size for the rivets. I hope to have it done by Friday so I can drop it off/hang it if they want me to Saturday, I will post pics when I can! Thanks again gentlemen

Yeah the hooks will be movable so I Kay just make up a handful in various sizes and let her decide what she wants to use and what she does not, she was very vauge on what she wanted other then "something to hang pots off of"

Yeah I looked at where she wants it, to make sure she had access to studs in the wall, but the space is small and I am only going to be able to make it 32 inches in width, so to supplement for the smaller hanger I think I will make a couple extra longer hooks so she can hang some pans lower then the others?
