  1. Thanks for the advise. I was hoping someone had made forged armour before and couls answer some of the questions. The only reason I asked the legal question was incase anyone had run into problems with forged armour before.
  2. I am an experienced SCA armourer. With starting Blacksmithing I want to forge armour to see if I can make better armour. The questions I have is: When Dishing cold steal you can change it from 12 to 14 gague is this the same with hot metal? Are there any kingdom/ society laws against doing this? Do you need to temper the piece when it is hardened? What metal is best? and finaly has anyone ever tried to forge weild a face grill? Just wanting some imput. :)
  3. My SCA name is Justin Stephen Caradoc. I chose that name because I have always liked the name Justin. Most of my frineds call me Justin to boot.
  4. Thanks All I am working on going to the July meeting Primtechsmith.
  5. Actualy Mende the process to change lead into gold has been done. The reason it is not used is because it costs alot more to turn lead into gold than the gold will ever be worth.
  6. normaly I would say anything that looks like a 1960's acid trip is uguly. However those gates are beutiful and well made. Fantastic work Adrian. :)
  7. Hello I have just learned smithing about a month ago. So far I have made tent stakes and a fire rake. I have wanted to learn blacksmithing for years and just now found a teacher whose idea of craftsmanship matches my expectations. I am a member of the SCA so I am going to be doing allot of recreating of medieval smithing. I am also a sculptor but working clay is boring to me right now and think metal is more my taste. I am working on building my own forge it is taking a little longer than I thought it would. If anyone finds them self in my neck of the woods please send me a PM and we will hook up.
  8. are there any blueprints on how to make rivits and nails?
  9. well the fact that the zinc releases a poisonous gas when heated makes me think forging galvanized metal is a bad idea. Not to be morbid but the zinc poisoning could be what killed the author.
  10. The first thing I ever forged was a tent stake. It is great for learning basic skills and the best part is that unlike the tent stakes you buy from wal~mart the forged stake will punch through concrete. I made it about a month ago.
  11. I the movie "Army of Darkness" there is also a smithing sceen when he is making his new hand.
  12. I can't get into the store. Is it still being worked on?
  13. I've never used a power hammer, however I have see one in action and they just scare the xxxx out of me. I know if I did use one I would get over it however that won't happen anythime soon my shop is to small for one anyhow :)
  14. Are there any plans for a treadle hammer online or someone I can get them for. The treadle hammer looks like i can move a good amount of metal. I don't like power hammers and this looks like a good alternative that I can build. Thanks
  15. how is the bulldozer broke? Just wondering :)
  16. a #2 cutting tip for the ox/ace is supposed to cut through 1-2' material. I was using a #1 cutting tip and it cut but had a hard time going through I am picking up the #2 tip and a larger oxy tank to finish the job next friday. The little oxy tank I was using lasted about 15 min and cut 6' I will post pictures next week sometime. I am photo documenting the construction of the forge and going to make a how to web site or blueprint for the brake drum forge. I also got a 115 amp blower from centaur forge that ways 5 lbs that I am going to use on it with a speed control. I can't wait till it is done. I have the hammer, iron and forge now I just need something to hit it on also I have a line on 1 ton of anthrosite coal for free. The will follow me home soon. I am bad at spelling so I am not sure the name of the coal is spelled right hope you can figure it out :)
  17. This my first post but I wanted to wtell what followed me home the other day. I stopped by a truck repair place and asked if they had any brake drums they were going to send for scrap so I can make a forge. The guy said sure and took me around back. There were 3 16' brake drums sitting there. I only toook one home though and boy was it heavy. I am going to weld 1/4' plate to the bottom to close up the holes and create the hole for the blower. I am also cutting 6' off the top to shallow out the bowl. The left over ring I am going to turn into punches and chissels. I can't think of anything better to do with 1 1/4' tool steel. BTW this is my first post and this sight is great.
