  1. and your life will quickly FADE
  2. Love it! I've been wanting to build something like that myself!
  3. I have forges made from an old truck wheel (not brake drum) & a plow disk I've seen pictures of a forge made from an inverted push lawn mower frame (engine removed)
  4. I'd be happy with just a little more time at the forge
  5. nice job. I really like the use of glass in your pieces
  6. good ideas. I was wondering how effective a wood swage block would be too...glad you asked the question!
  7. Thanks Rob...I was unsure if I even saw the "A" prefix because of a chip in the foot. I've seen other Trenton's that did have an "A" prefix to the serial number so I thought this one might. '07 sounds about right...thanks!
  8. I have a couple of old cross pein hammers that I got cheap from a flea market & tractor show...fairly small 1 ib & 1 1/2 lb...I mostly work on small pieces and just don't need a big hammer...yet :)
  9. Great idea to try the shaving cream! I was able to read the weight and most of the serial number...slight damage to one side makes it impossible to be 100% sure. Serial number looks like A 70290 Anybody with a "Anvils In America" book mind looking up the date for me? I don't have the book yet. Thanks!
  10. Can anyone out there with a AIA book help me with a date on a Trenton anvil? It's a little hard to read the serial number but it looks like- Z529 or A529 (or 7029?) Any help will be greatly appreciated John
  11. Very cool! I like it...nice to see something "different"
  12. I always get a little jealous at the great deals people find at flea markets, auctions, etc. I NEVER find deals at antique stores anymore BUT this weekend for $150 I bought a Champion 400 blower on the stand (they thought it was a corn shucker), a Buffalo forge blower (smaller sheet metal type), a pair of tongs, a leg vise, and a beautifully hand forged 4 piece fireplace tool set with a very nicely made stand. The items came from two different antique stores. Sorry, I'm happy and just wanted to brag a little Now, I need to find the time to spend at the forge! John
  13. I pick up coal along the railroad tracks. It's coal destined for power plants in the area that fell out of the cars. It is NOT the same quality as metalurgical grade coal but it works fine...especially if you don't know the difference. The RR coal doesn't coke well, if at all, burns up quicker, and leaves more ash but produces more than enough heat.
  14. Looks good! I didn't have a brake drum when I made my forge so I used an old wheel instead...8 months later it's still holding up great.
  15. nice job! I haven't tried one yet...maybe that will be my next project!
