I was taught (and what I practice) is that at least 5" of coals between your work and the air coming into the fire. At this depth the oxygen is burnt off and scaling is reduced dramatically.

can any one say boat anchor HA HA HA

Here is a series of photos I did a while back. I have just always assumed when you got it hot enough to forge weld it would burn anything else out of it. I put this knife in our auction at our conference last year and included this series of photos with it.

Very nice I am surprized barbed wire forge welded like that.

I wear sweat bands (like tennis players wear I got mine at Wally world) just above my glasses and that really helps with the sweat problems. I have glasses that have the side protectors I got from my eye doctor. That works for me

I have to say this I had some welds like that when I was learning to weld with an old buzz box years ago. Would not be proud of it to day but when I got the metal to stick I was a proud puppy. That might be what this picture represent a beginners weld, be proud that he is learning...

Great one frosty lol

Very nice work

Nice work I like the pattern
-
Sounds interesting but I have to agree with easilyconfused that you forge weld a high carbon cutting edge in so you have a good knife.
-
I agree with John I have used 20 Muleteam borax to weld damascus with and am happy.
-
LOL Frosty you should have asked if he was going to wear casual or evening dress...
What he wears would affect his make up..
Jimmy the metals sound fine but pattern will be decided by how you work the billet after it is made. -
Very nice work please finish and post more pictures
-
Pick me up a bakers dozen whil you are at it. Thanks William

Keep us posted and take pictures of your progress and when you are finished be honest and tell us if it was worth while to make this as a project. What class is this for by the way?
-
Wish I could help but I live in Arizona but if you are in the area we could forge out a knife.

I must have missed that part, as I assumed you were setting bevels along the blade the way it read. But I am good at being Confused easily. makes sense to be a necking tool. I like it
-
Neat!! Does it tend to cause a curve to the blade? (easily corrected) but just curious
I was taught to bend the blade before I do this so as the blade curves it actually strighten its self out. If you can figure out what I mean.if this is how you get the bevel, how does manage the distal taper?
I draw out the distal taper by hand. -

Yes you are in our prayers for a speedy recovery and that the Doctors would have the wisdom to know what is going on. William
