    weld area

This is the area that the grab rail got welded to the lower stairway railing. The welding was done w/ TIG so no sparks and such would damage the stair treads. Then touch-up on the paint job.

Final install on the grab rail.
  7. This shows the fixture I made to make the grab rail. I duplicated the step, landing and post measurement points so I could form fit the railcap to make sure it fit onsite.

  11. This is the return for a stairway railing, it mounts on 2 adjacent sides of a 4"x4" wood post
  12. This shows the fixture I made for forming/fitting to match the angle of an end scroll for a stairway railing. The 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" tube represents the wood post it will be fastened to upon installation. The scroll will be cut on this side of the vertical tube and a mounting plate welded to it so it can be lag bolted into the post.

  20. The Central Minnesota Blacksmiths have been having very good turnouts in my opinion compared to others I've talked to: We usually have at least 20-25 plus people show up every month at our hammer-ins. The main thing is that there should always be a live demo with a fire in the forge and metal being pounded to demonstrate some form of process or making of something, as that's what people come for. We have a very good group and fortunately have good demonstrations. Watching is always better than reading or telling someone how to do something - mainly for the ones that have never seen or done it before. Even if is is something simple - people expect to "see" something being done. - Jk -Member CMB
  21. This is another view of the finished spring mount. The raised part was hammered into the end of a thick walled pipe to the depth of the original bracket, then finish hammered on the end of the anvil horn, all other bends and edges were formed in the vise and on the anvil by hand.

This is the finished spring mount ready for welding in place on the car at a service garage. The metal used was 1/8" hot rolled plate.
