Motorcycle Chain for Hold Downs
I have some monster chain from a Steel Mill that I have a good amount of feet that I will use for this. I bordered it around my vise table and just wrapped some around base for weight. I don’t know why it is sideways.

Is this what you are referring to with a jack shaft.

Well-designed guided helve hammer
I know this is an older thread but this is the next hammer I want to build. I have been looking for something a little different that also looked great. I love the features of this hammer. Where can I get some dimensions to a hammer like this?

Arftist do you have any pictures of your hammer? Johnny Woolsey do you have any more info on your planned build?

150-200# Tire hammer or Helve style hammer
I am wanting to build a large hammer in the 150-200 pound range. I have already built a Clay Spencer 65 pound hammer and love it, but I want to build something that hits a lot harder but slower as well. I was told that a helve hammer would suit this better, told that it hits harder than the same weighted tire hammer but with less control. I spoke to Clay about beefing up the 65 design and he pointed me to look at the sizes of the 100#Little Giant to get an idea of how much to scale up. Which design would work best at 150-200 pounds and 150ish bpm?

No way, some ribbing is all good, don’t have thin skin. You guys and especially you Mr Powers provide way to much valuable information and knowledge it would be crazy to ignore you or anyone willing to post a reply. If I came off as upset I am sorry if anything I might have been stressed with the baby being really fussy. Some of it is to make some different top tools and hammers and such under the power hammer. I have seen some people use hammer eye tongs at the power hammer but it seems to unstable. Maybe I just need to practice.

Mr Powers thank you for the boop on the back of the head and the better way of thinking about the responses and the possible reasons for the type of replies. It is so easy to take things wrongly on the internet and all types of social media. I do want to know what a Barley corn is lol. I know now there is always a lot to learn from trial and error and mistakes however when I am working I work 7 days a week an average of 70-80 hours a week in a steel mill and I have 4 young kids. The point being is that when I do have time to forge and want to be around the heat after being in the mill all day I only have only a limited amount of time. Anything that I can do to make it successful and not waste 4 hours on a failure makes the experience more enjoyable. As of right now I am off work after having both hips operated on and can only manage to stand for a little while so I guess the same thing applies. I do a lot of ready on this site and think I have watched every video on YouTube and appreciate every bit of knowledge you guys put out there for those of us that are new to the hobby. I do realize that you have all this experience because you have all gone through the trial and error and mistakes that many of use are trying to get around.

Inch Inch, all but one of the people that replied are from the States, But I am sorry to make you guys have to assume. I was typing with one hand while rocking my 2 month old daughter. 1 1/2 square, Thank you for the point towards the pdf. I have seen that and have it saved to my phone but I don’t know how to figure up the best size to start with. I will just fumble my way through it, I have some 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 1045 the I will see what happens.

Another tool from the Cave Man Forge
Yes the op, it is either .650x 1.250 or .650x 1 both being 1060. The tolerances are tight and the inspection of the bar is more than most because of how hard the bends are. Any defect will open up when they form it.

I work at a steel mill and we make the steel for Railroad clips you have pictured and they are 1060.

Base for striking anvil
I was thinking of a base shaped like a T, with the two uprights coming up from that. I may have not been very clear.

Base for striking anvil
I am building a striking anvil with a piece of mild steel that is 2"x5"x24" , I might be able to get some one inch plate from work and I have 3 inch tubing. All the pictures I have seen has 2" tubing splayed 8 degrees out with three legs. I am trying to do it without buying anything, 3inch tubing won't work with the normal configuration but what about a t base with two uprights?

Guidance for making hammers
So I am going to break up this thing to smaller steps to not be so intimidating, instead of thinking I need all these tools what do i do? I am going to start with the hand held drift so that I can make me a handled version.

Guidance for making hammers
Hello all, I have been reading off and on for a little while trying to learn from the talented group of people on this forum. I have been in resent contact with a couple of guys from this forum, Brian Brazeal and Dave "FieryFurnace", inquiring about tools and a possible class. My purpose for this post is three fold. First, when I contacted Mr. Brazeal regarding information about a class I recieved a reply very quickly and with quite bit of information. I very much want to get a chance to spend some time with him this year. He seems like a real class act, I have been watching his videos every night. Second, I contacted "FieryFurnace" about his hammers. After a couple of exchanges about different things I asked about making me some of the tools that are needed to make hammers, well he turned me down. I have not ever been turned down in such a respectfull and professional way. In his response to me I felt his passion for his craft and his desire to only put out a high quality of work, he eared some respect from me. I will be doing some business with him in the future. (I always like to give credit where I believe it is due and these two gentleman desire it in my opinion) Lastly, I am interested in making my own tools and there are so many threads on hammers but it doesn't seem to be anything that I can find that explains all the tools that I would need to make a hammer. I am just getting into Blacksmithing with only having my forge, anvil one pair of tongs and an anvil, where do I start? What tools should I start making first? I work at a Steel mill and have access to all the mild steel that I ever could want as well as some tool steel from equipment that breaks ( machined shafts and very large bearings) as well as many sizes of wire rope going all the way up to 2inch for hundred ton cranes. Sorry for the long post but it is my first, any help would be appreciated. Shawn
