in 1831 theColonial Anvils had many sides and uses .

I DID look very closely and that anvil is surely right side UP! It is just an older type of anvil and so looks a bit strange to modern eyes. You can clearly see the wear and crowning on the top surfaces if you click on the picture to see it enlarged. It even has a hole in the center of the anvil for tooling.

Pure Oxygen is Highly flamable ! make sure it is compleatly emptyand let it set for days with the valve open , some cylinders have a pours type of cement (it is light weight ) they fill the tanks with it holds residual Oxygen . remove valve with caution and cut with caution .

sounds like you are welding on Cast steel , Cast iron , or Pot metal , show a photo of the weld and face of it where it broke . please

Looks like maybe an early design for a cleco? Used for holding two pieces of sheet metal together in a lap joint so they can be welded securely.

first off start with a smaller photo .

Next work with 1 / One Steel ! you are a newbie to Damascus and it is not an easy thing to master .

As for a milti type of steel wait for it ! !!! you will pull you hair out , I have made and worked with Damascus / pattern welding for quite some time and even for a Master Blade Smith at home a tri level or more is Extremely hard to do well with out having any delamination or failures of the steel.

start slow / small and work up it will help you in the long run I Know first hand , by all means do not give up on your ideas but you have to crawl before you run .
