  1. Looks like the festival demonstration was a big success! And ODBSA added six new members, too! ... from today's Current News * It should have been against the LAW---- To have that much "FUN" as we all did at the Appomattox Railroad Festival EVENT this past weekend. David Hinshaw brought an extra forge station so we had four total, all of which were needed. We could have used one more Sat. * This photo says so much! David Hinshaw's interaction amongst the public was amazing, especially with children.
  2. The Old Dominion Blacksmith Association will have at least 3 forge stations set up in Abbitt Park for both days of the Appomattox Railroad Festival. This is the 38th year of the festival that is expected to draw about 35,000 visitors over the two days. Over a dozen ODBSA members have signed up to take turns manning the forges to demonstrate their blacksmithing skills to the public. If you'll be at the festival or in the Central Virginia area, come on over and watch for a while. For participating members, basic tools will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own if you like. If you are not currently an ODBSA member and have an interest in joining or learning about blacksmithing, we will have ODBSA brochures available at the festival with a membership application form inside. The weather looks to be perfect this weekend for getting outside, so come on down to Appomattox and join in the fun.
  3. This weekend is Fall Break for both of the boys. They're coming home for a long weekend at the same time. How great is that!?

  7. David, Great pics on the site today. I thought you'd hung up your cross-pein or been abducted by aliens. How are you?

  8. Larry, Your timelapse video of forging the human face is absolutely remarkable. Wow!
  9. Heading to Long Island, VA in the morning to see Billy Phelps demo at Bobby Floyd's Buttercup Plantation Forge. Expecting a really good turnout from ODBSA. If the rain holds off it's going to be an awesome day. Heck, it'll be great even if it does rain.

  10. Holy cow! How much electricity does your coil draw? I don't think I've ever seen metal come up to temp so fast. Forget about the cool press and dies, it's amazing just to watch the work piece go from cold to yellow in seconds! It certainly is not your converted backyard barbeque grill forge. Thanks for the Demo, Grant... and btw, I couldn't read your t-shirt.
  11. The boys wanted to have a "forging day" before going off to college. So we spent all Sunday in the backyard having fun, except for the 1/2 hour it rained (and reminded us to stop and eat lunch). Great day!

  12. Very nice forge. Would love to see pics of the whole shop. Does the forward slant of the exhaust opening help? Or have you found it to get in the way at all?
  13. Really nice work. Very creative. I'm sure he will love it.
  14. By the way, does anybody know how to view this file on a Linux machine? It opens with openoffice by default. The pictures are visible, but much of the text is obscured behind white panels. Is there a better viewer available which is not too hard to install?
  15. Hello from Lynchburg, VA. I grew up in Scarborough and haven't lived in Maine since '81. I am just beginning to learn blacksmithing. Are you a hobbyist, or are you trying to become a professional blacksmith? I miss Maine.

Bill, I am currently a hobbist, but, with luck I would like to develop the hobby to enough sales to pay for itself as well as pay me at least a small amount.

  22. Somewhat similar story here in Virginia, Michael... except both my boys wanted to share the forge time with me! We took turns until we couldn't see any more and put everything away in the dark. We had an absolute blast.
  23. Jerry (High Velocity) Darnell put on a great show at LT's shop.

  24. Heading over to LT Skinnell's Otter Hill Forge Saturday for the ODBSA June meeting. Jerry Darnell will be demonstrating.
