  1. I purchased these for cheap, I think I got a great deal. They are wrought iron, finely made, there is a "7" stamped on one of the legs, but they span slightly better than 8". I really dig these stinkin' things. The age of the tool I would not be able to guess, until I did some research. I can't imagine when the last time is they made tools from wrought iron?
  2. Thanks Mark I will take you up on your offer when I get settled in KO
  3. Hello Mark I just moved to Central Point, is there a group of blacksmiths around here? I haven't really unpacked yet, still in chaos. I am renting presently, looking to buy. Yes, not many have accepted the devaluation of real estate around here, but there was a three million dollar price reduction on a 60 acre equestrian ranch in Ashland. Now it's only 3 mil. I went through a property management corporation to find this house, as much as I hated to do it, it was one way to be sure the property was inhabitable. They want a nominal fee, credit ,and a back ground check that only covers Oregon. That could be an option once an area has been decided on Avadon. Only a suggestion. Happy Steppin' Kenny O'Loughlin
  4. I sent a picture to Nikon and the identified it as a... " ...Type 3 stand for Nikon Autocollimator "
  5. Thanks all for your observations, knowledge, and opinions. I guess what it really wants to be, is a lamp. I know that I will never put it to its intended use, but I'm the only person I know who has one. Any ideas what to make of it , would be an interesting venture; Anchor ?
  6. I realize this is not a machine tool, but I bought it from a machinist, does that count? I picked this up at a yard sale for $10. It weighs about 50#. NIKON 6969 is all that IDs it. I have searched the web with no success. This thing finely adjusts in X,Y,& Z axis. Maybe it's for an X-Ray machine? I had to have it, it was to cool to pass up. Thank you for your help!
  7. "...The only thing I changed was using my round face instead of the flat face, and, yes, misses and good hits are more obvious. I will also use my round face when cutting on my hot cut hardy for the same reasons (more pounds per square inch and less likely to hit off on either side)..." Hello Brian I'm diggin' that hammer of yours , what was the parent stock? I saw some of your tooling to make the rounded face on picassa, at least what I think was the bottom die. Is there a reference I might turn to to see your steps? Not that it would be to hard to figure it out, but I guess I'm lazy like that. Thanks
  8. I have yet to find any information on this torch, some kind of users data would be nice.I checked McMaster Carr with no results. Any help would be appreciated.
  9. I have about 60' of 1" 4340 in 32" increments. I was hoping to make chisels for stamping hot metal, eye punches, maybe a few foot stamps. Also for hammers what would the heat tx be? I would like to put this steel to use in its proper use range. The research tells me "landing gear" is its primary purpose. I plan on making tools with it. Sorry about the slow response
  10. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge, Do you plan on teaching in the North West at any time in the future? While watching the video I noticed that the anvil doesn't move a hair, how is it attached to the earth?
  11. I picked up some 4340 at the metal recycle, I thought it would make good chisels. I don't think I am gonna be doin' any 2hr tempering. Might there be a simpler process for a simple guy? Thanx
  12. I guess acetylene would not work, and by "air" they don't mean O2. Maybe they literally mean nat gas and air? I don't know what it might be used for, I will search for more data. Shaping glass in a lab? Thanx for the information, I will post any new info I come across. When I part with it you are the first to know MM.
  13. I acquired this old torch for $2. Now I need to know what it is for. The inlets are marked "GAS" & "AIR" (any old gas,any old air). The tip has N1 stamped on it. I "Googled" The manufacturer but nothing relevant surfaced. The manufacturer is : A.M GAS FURNACE CO. ELIZABETH N.J Thank you for your help. Kenny O
  14. I live in Grants Pass. The product is in...................................White City....................... at.................. White City Metals. It is about 7 acres of treasures neatly stacked.
  15. I have a few sticks of 4340 (1.125"x36") I picked up for .50/lb. It seemed fair? I had to have it! there is about a ton of 36" sections left. My dilemma is that I don't want to waste the material through my ignorance. What tools are best made with this alloy? Chisels okay? My Machinery's Handbook gives me temperature limits I am not sure I can judge with my resources, colors work better. I guess I need a blacksmith's perspective to understand the process. Thank you for your time
  16. what percentage of smiths are using power hammers? I guess with cable a person doesn't need one.
  17. Thank you for the many great ideas and options! I hadn't thought of sheeting a roof, or fire proofing a wall. The heat gun might work. With paint on both sides the labor and blast media would be enough to drive a person nutz I think I am going to do the bonfire thing there's no fire ban yet, I would most likely use them for sculptures, and in that case they would be a more organic shape anyway. I actually don't have any more than one project in mind, two eight sided 12" tall retro style rockets(Flash Gordon style) that will end up being a chronulator The hardest part will be brazing the eight pieces without warping the whole deal. I guess I have a thing for flat sheet metal, I must think out side the box. Thank you all for your time! Kenny
  18. Hello All, thanks for your time. I was given about fifty real estate signs from a retired broker. Nice sheet metal but there is paint all over it, and this stuff is near bullet proof! Is there a way to get this sheet clean w/out warping it. I haven't tried the torch yet cuz I want them to stay flat. I tried "Strip-eze".... Forgetaboutit I would rather throw them out than go through that again! I hate to see all that steel go to the scrap just because of some paint! Thank you all
  19. Although I may lack the experience and skill to make a proper knife of this steel, I do posses enough information to screw it up. So be it, scrap I shall make! By the way Steve, sorry for yelling I was raised in a suburb of N.Y.
  20. THE THREE BLADES ALL HAVE DISSTON 50 PRINTED ON THEM. I WILL GOOGLE THIS AND SEE WHAT I GET. WELL.. DISSTON IS AN OLD TOOL MFG. CO. MOSTLY CUTTING TOOLS. I DID NOT SEE ANY DATA ON THEM AFTER THE '40s. THEY ARE 1-3/16"W X 3/16"T X 15"LONG @ 3/16 THICK, WOULDN'T THAT BE A BUNCH OF GRINDING?
  21. I have inherited three wood planer blades(15"). Can they be used for a knife? What might I do to them prior to forging? Anneal? I have only made RR spike knives. Thanx for the help 2DOGS
  22. I have access to a Hossfeld bender. To many options to wing it,and mistakes are costly. I remember coming across a web page a few years ago with great instruction on this machine. Any direction is greatly appreciated! The community college purchased one with no idea how to use it, just wanted to say they had one. I don't want it to go to waste. They received nothing with it as far as instruction.I am waiting for the mfg publication, but as I recall it was not that great. I wish I could remember where I saw that link. Thank you Kenny O
  23. It jams when I start to crank it, It wont go forward or back, then I have to mess with the fan to get it to release. I did notice there is a 2" carriage bolt holding one of the sprockets to the shaft. So I was hoping for a schematic to help me figure out the proper hardware, I will take some photos tomorrow for better visuals. Here are the photos of the carriage bolt, both top & bottom. What should be in that place?
  24. Hello all I have a model 300 blower that needs to be rebuilt. I am going to attempt it, but I thought I might read the directions first... But there are no directions, and I don't usually read them anyway, and with disastrous results I might add. So, I am just asking for any information that might help in this process. Thanks
  25. Very nice! Thank you all for the help.I'll check out those Blueprints
