  1. I have had one of the 110 Russian anvils from HF for a few years now and it actually has fairly good rebound. If you can locate a store that still has them I feel they are a good starter anvil especially for the money. A little time with and angle grinder on the horn and they work pretty well. I bought a 180 lb Sea Robin bladesmith anvil and use it most of the time but would not sell the old Russian girl off, still comes in handy. Never enough anvils. Jerry Fisher
  2. The one I have both ends are open for convenience of longer items, the tail end it not as large as the mouth. When Im heat treating knives I slide it back and forth to eliminate hot spots. Actuall works well with smaller items.
  3. I've got one like that and use it for heat treating small blades. Nice not to have to fire up the large gasser for small stuff. Jerry Fisher
  4. Is it high enough outside to come off the side with a shed roof and make a hot area for your forge and anvil and use the shed itself for finish work. I had my shop for years before i got into forging and its off the ground like yours and lots of stuff in it. You could just use a gravel base outside. In the winter the forge keeps me warm and in the summer with just a roof its much cooler. Course I just do bladesmithing. Just a thought. Jerry Fisher
  5. I have a serious case of Anvil Envy now, that sure is a pretty rascal. Great setup with the stand and all. Looks like a winner. Jerry
  6. That is really looking good now. Im just looking at the size of the timbers your using, looks like nice stuff. They just look heavier than the regular 2 by stuff we have here, are they laminated or regular stock. Jerry Fisher
  7. Does anyone know if Mr. Hofi will be demonstrating in North Carolina again. Would love to attend a demonstration of his hand hammer technique. Jerry Fisher
  8. Thansk Glenn, Excellent interview there , really apprecaite the link. I really enjoyed the read. Jerry Fisher
  9. Archie, How heavy was the hammer you were using. Just wondered, im still searching for the perfect set up myself. Jerry
  10. Fellas just as an aside here, always wear ear protection. Over the years from exposure to noises such as the anvil ringing can cause tinnitus, and I can assure you that you do not want this. Not from forging but from other exposures over the years it finally caught up with me and I have a constant sound some what like a pork chop frying in grease and the beginnins of a burnt bearing going in my head 24/7. It really takes some time to come to grips with it and I would not wish it on anyone. It is also accompanied by hyperacusis in my case, some sounds sound considerably louder to me and change tone. I have to wear ear plugs in the shower and also at church . Hearing loss would be mild to this. Take my advise and protect your hearing, especially you fellas with the power hammers and ringing anvils. Jerry Fisher
  11. Not going to be there on the 16th but going to try to stop by next week and check out the village. Jerry
  12. Looks like a serious cutter. Jerry
  13. I usually tap the anvil when im turning the work. I dont really think about it but notice that I do, guess its a rythum thing. Jerry
  14. Check the authors name fellas, looks like a grins and giggles post. Jerry
  15. Just a thought here, where are u guys getting the tanks filled at, I usually do the replacement thing at the local Home Depot. Just wondered if there was a difference if you took it to the gas place. Really convenient though where I get it now, can do it 24/7. Jerry
  16. Im running a blown burner with 1 1/4 reducer to 1 inch pipe going into the forge ( fogg type vertical forge ). Im usually running about 2 pounds on the 0 to 30 regulator with my needle valve about half open. It just seems like Im not getting anywhere near the time I should. Im using the 10 ft hose and 0-30 regulator i got from Darren Ellis. Jerry
  17. Man it just dont get no better than that, and a Hofi hammer to boot. Jerry
  18. For those of you that use the small BBQ size propane tanks, about how long of burn time are you getting. I have a vertical forge -with blown burner . If im forging at about 1 to 2 lbs of pressure it usually starts to get low and freeze up after about 3 hours, not usually 3 hours at one time, but over several days. Gonna put tank in water filled tub and see if I can nurse it along till completely empty. Just wondering what the most anyone is getting and any tips in their use. thanks Jerry
  19. I want to be able to use flat and round stock, billet weld up for damascus is beyond my skill set at this time. I had thought to get a duckbill v bit and a wolfjaw from toms to handle flat and round. I know can never have too many kinds but starting to learn what I really need at this point . Jerry

    Tongs

New to forging and just finished building my gas forge and have everything but tongs, been gettin by with some old vice grips and such but want to order some in the next couple of days. These will be for knife work only, just wondering what you would suggest as the most versatile to start with. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Jerry
