  3. Looks to me it would be well worth the money but that depends on if you need something else worse than a hammer. It would also depend on where you are located and how frequent hammers come up for sale. Speaking of where you are located if you Step 1. A sililar flat spring could be scrounged and reshaped, hardended and tempered or you could contact a custom spring manufacturer.

  6. I cant be much help as Here in Minnesota they are very rare. I have been to several hundred auctins in my life and only saw a few. One thing to look for is if the upsetting stop is with it. This is a height adjustable block holds the rod to upset the end for when making a bolt or something similar
  7. Welcome to the group Once it is in your blood it is hard to quite Hope you are back forging blades soon
  8. Happy birthday and welcome to the group
  9. There are two or more ways to make charcoal I just fill a 55 gal barrel with no top about 1 foot overflowing with 2X4 6 8 ect I have four 2 inch holes in the barrel sides aboout 1 inch from the bottom. I have steel plugs that fit these holes. I light the wood from the bottom and after it has burned for an hour or more depending on wind velocity I plug the bottom holes and cover the barrel. It is time to cover when you grab a piece of burning wood with tongs and it breaks. If it is still solid you need more burn time. If you have some of these pieces from one burn add them near the end of the next burn. When the fire is out and cool I break up the charcoal and start the next batch. Another type burn is to capture the smoke route it to the flame to roast the wood. Probably called a retort (SP) burner.
  10. When they make briquettes they grind up the charcoal, mix it with dirt and compress it into the briquettes. I believe this is to control ho fast they burn. So basically you are buying dirt. If you want to buy charcoal you need to get cowboy or lump charcoal. I make my own but live in a rural area where the smoke doesnt bother my neighboors
  11. Congradulations on the forge weld I once saw Ed Grove demonstrate. He must have been in his 70s and he made the comment forge welding used to be so easy before everyone started telling him how hard it was. Also Bob Patrick, forge welding guru, once said forge welding was like olimpic figure skating you cant do it once a month and expect to win. Keep welding the more you do it the more confidence it will give you.
  12. The few deonstrators I wathced that made fry pans had a tappered form cut from plate that was clamped to the sheet. They then heated areas with a torch and worked it up the form on the outside. This form was used as a back up to upset the steel to and made the size pan they wanted.
  13. Go to the home page then groups Lama is the LA group Try contacting them for someone close. They had 2 Minnesota guys down for two days of hammer making class early Dec.

    Hello

    Welcome to the group
  15. I see on the above post I needed to do spell check before I hit reply
  16. How large is your piece too large for the kitchen stove top? I sometimes put it on the propame stove burner and keep moving it around Like it was mentioned earlier it is easy to get too hot heat it a little then shout off the burner. You can always ass more heat. Too much heat and you have to pollich and start over. Some use a toaster oven if the piece is small enough

  22. Thanks for the quick reply My plans were to arrive in Memphis the night of May 30 Sounds like your conference will be a great addition to the trip. I heard about the conference via Nathan Robertson, Jack Pine Forge hammer maker. He just returned to N. Minnesota from Louisiana where he taught a couple of hammer making class. Sounds like a bunch of LA members are planning to attend on the way to ABANA also. See you there
  23. Heard that the Mississippi conference will be memorial weekend. Is this correct and who will be the demonstrator. I tried the MS web page but it did not list any info. I am coming down for the ABANA conference early and would be interested in cour conference also. Roger Degner UMBA video librarian
