  1. thanks Phil, here are a few I have found.. http://www.instructables.com/id/2-day-20-50-Blacksmithing-Forge/ http://factoidz.com/to-make-a-western-blacksmith-knife/ http://fenrisforge.com/index.htm
  2. Since I am new to the Blacksmith trade I have been doing a lot of research and have come across a ton of useful info that could be very useful to another beginer. So, I was wondering could I start a thread with links that I do come across that I "think" might be helpful to the inexpirenced Blacksmith? And, maybe get some additional ones from you expirenced Blacksmiths as well?
  3. Wow..never really thought of it that way..
  4. Thanks Phil, actualy someone on craigslist that shows up in a search from the site you gave me contacted me about selling me one. I placed a "wanted" add on craigslist..lol..dumb luck?
  5. Wow, great idea actualy! My problem has always been, I dive in head first without researching what I'm about to dive into and I get frustrated and quit. BUT, this looks like an awesome vent, hobby, or whatever I want to do with it. So, I have to force myself to slow down and read up on Blacksmithing. This is something I really think I will enjoy doing. Thanks for all the help!
  6. Like I said in a previous post, patience is not one of my good virtues..lol..but if I want to to the job right I will figure something out for an anvil. And no, my first car was a 69 Lemans for 650 bucks, definety not 50k for any of my vehicles..lol..don't even think I'd want to drive a 50k vehicle unless it was a BigDog chopper, or a King Ranch F 150..lol..Had to throw that in..
  7. True! Patience is not my virtue though..lol.. But I am going to hold of and slow down a bit and look for a good anvil so I can do the job right. ADD is a bitch..
  8. What's a Lemans!?!?..lol..my old 1969 Pontiac Lemans, that just sets in the garage collecting dust. She needs a total restoration, almost every single part needs to be replaced..and I'M NOT BEING SARCASTIC..lol.. Ya, brain fart on the hole blower motor idea..Thanks though Frosty, xxxx you are a smart smither..lol..seriously!
  9. I'm in Monroe Michigan, just called an antique dealer, she said she might have one. But, if I wanted to make a rr anvil, how do I go about getting some..I realize walk the tracks, but am I going to get arrested for taking scrap rail..lol..
  10. so it's a 50 # piece of xxxx then, is that what you are getting at..lol..
  11. If I were to buy one from there should I round the edges, looks like they might be sharp?
  12. Sorry I can't help, but you do some beautiful work!
  13. Harborfreight has a few for sale. I know harborfreight isn't known for quality tools.. I believe they have heavier ones but here is a link to the one I found online. It's a 55 pounder. http://www.harborfreight.com/55-lb-anvil-806.html It would work for now and at least I could get an idea if it;s something I want to try, Blacksmithing that is. Any objections or comments about the anvil, to cheap? I'd bet my life that it's made in Korea but for the price I can't beat it..lol..pun intented.
  14. AHHH it's the only thing stopping me from getting going. I've got the forge plans covered, kind of.. But what's the point without an anvil. The railroad rail just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I read a few places that they aren't very good, or useful. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and will try it if I can't find an anvil close. Money is tight these days so 300 bucks for a used one is a lot of dough. I have to be able to justify the money..lol..Anyone have pics of a railroad anvil that they actualy use and like?
  15. Could of sworn I read in some "BOOK" "an eye for an eye".. Oh but wait, we live in a society of laws..lol..silly me.. Best of luck to you and your family! I hope they catch them "2" and may God have "NO" mercy on them!
  16. Wow, you are my twin..lol..I was and am kind of in the same sitution. I was injured at work, had a 600 pound piece of stone pinch me between it and the inside of a box truck (long story). But I filed for ssdi and I didn't have to fight it, thank god!! Someone was praying for me on that one!! It's not a good thing but it is. I have trouble being only 35 and told I am not allowed to EVER work again.. My piece of xxxx neurosurgen told me that one more injury to my back, in particular my spine, he wouldn't be able to fix me..lol..wtf?! I had a thorocotomy with a 4 level fusion using my two lower ribs instead of putting good old steel in me. BUT, they f'ed up when they patched me back together. The moron a-hole doc doing my lungs and innerds or guts, chopped a bunch of nerves in two BY ACCIDENT and they are all now dead, yey me.. Ok, I rear end the guy in front of me, that's an accident, not permeantly f'ing me up that's just to many drinks the night before doc! Well anyhow enough venting, maybe someone should say a prayer for me..lol..or better yet that idiot doc that chopped me up..lol.. Glad to hear you are doing better, god bless!
  17. Awesome work Jeff!! Leaf looks really cool! I'll try and give you a ring this week if I get a chance. Man I need a vacation..lol
  18. I was thinking of using the squirell cage and blower from my Lemans (it's getting replaced anyhow why not use it) but I'm a little unsure how to adapt it for a forge. I'd need a motor, or could I use the old motor as long as it's good, right? LOL..here we go again Frosty..
  19. well I need an anvil, that's the only real hang up I have. The forge should be pretty simple (I hope), but I don't want to put the cart before the horse, or vise versa. So, I need to find some railroad rail or something for now. The anvil on craigslist is a bit much for now, if I knew 100 percent that I could do this and really enjoyed it (which I think I will) I could see spending the money on an anvil. But, for now, I think I might hunt some rail down or go to the scrap yard and see what my brain can come up with for an anvil. I'm a good torcher (well at least I like to think) so who knows.
  20. good idea jeff, thanks..i'll try to call you today but I have the kids this weekend.. My boy just turned 1 and my girl is 2 going on 18..lol..drama queen if you know what I mean..Do you forge your own knives and tools and etc.?
  21. One of my hobbies that I have set aside is restoring a 69 Pontiac Lemans. But, it just sets in the garage collecting dust. All of the suspension, rims, and misc. steel parts are all shot or worn out. So, I'm thinking I have a good ammount of steel to make not only a forge but also a few knives, tools, and whatever I might want to try out. The steel is 41 years old so it should be pretty pure, correct? I can use everything from the 4 brake drums, 4 rims, 4 coil springs, and even the front sway bar. Good idea? I don't mind using the old parts, they would get scrapped anyways and replaced with aftermarket pieces.
  22. Thanks Jeff! I might take you up on that offer, I might be able to get away next weekend. My schedule is all over the place. I will definetly get in touch with you. Maybe between our two brains we can figure out my idea for my forge..or I can get some good ones from you as well. I'll pm my number to ya..
  23. Thanks Frosty, and yes I think I might be letting my ideas get away from me just like my first marriage..But anyhow, I think I might downsize to something different, or smaller I should say. I like the idea of building my own forge or at least fabbing it the way I want it, that way if it's royaly screwed up, I only have myself to blame. I was going to line the inside of the grill with furnace cement and then cut to fit a fire blanket inside of it as well. But, seeings how I might downsize now, who knows what the hell I'm doing.. I'm at least going to use the stand from the grill and make my first forge portable (grill has 2 wheels) and easier to roll it to where I need it or want it. I will keep you guys posted because I still have questions that only you guys can answer, or guys like us..lol
  24. I have an old gas grill I plan on turning into a forge. It's a smaller size grill, probaly 12 to 14 inches deep (bottom) and 6 to 8 inches deep on the top. Here is a link to aussie web site, makers of my old grill, that's what it looked like when it was new..Mine has seen better days, but mine as well use it it's free! http://aussiegrills.com/products_bondi_deluxe.php I'm not planning on a gas forge but rather a coke/charcoal I'm thinking. I'll try to post pics soon, I just have it dismanteled now, but hopefully soon I can sort some of these ideas out in my head and get going..
