  18. Welcome aboard Anthony. There is a lot to learn for everyone. I am hoping to get to see Montrose one day. My mother was born there in 1924, her father used to work in a gold mine that was located in Montrose. I remember her telling me it was a town surrounded by mountains. Lyle
  19. Here is a post I did about tempering a while back http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f14/should-have-tempered-5211/ These questions you are asking would be great to ask tonight on the knife chat as well.
  20. Our next meeting with the MS Forge Council is going to be a demonstration of pewter casting. The second Saturday of Oct. I will post some pics afterwards.
  21. Hey Jafo, personally I have started only using the finest grit or polish. For years I was searching for a miracle compound to make things go easier, even found some that would produce sparks from the buffing wheel but it dried out very easily and got hard as a rock. I have learned I can hand sand with various grits of sand paper to get a mirror finish within about 2 hours on most blades. I start with 220 grit usually sometimes rougher, and go all the way to 2000 grit if wanted. Once you get past 400 grit its easy to clean a blade up with 600 then 800 ...
  22. Hey Charlie, I will be at Tannehill Saturday. Ricardo and I are going to go over and come home on Saturday. If you see a bald head and a name tag that says Lyle, speak up. I start my fires with three pieces of news paper balled up together like a mushroom. Light the bottom turn on the air, and put some coal around the newspaper but leave a hole somewhere, so the fire can breathe. Good luck.
  23. These fullers and the chisel were all made from H-13. In this class we were told not to quench the steel and after forging, the H-13 would reach a rockwell hardness of 54C. We were told to make two chisels as well so one could cool when it got hot.
  24. Instead of searching the net for eel gig do a search for eel spear, there are a lot more that way. I did not realize those eels get so big.
  25. This sounds like a fancy port-a-power. Your 4 jacks would no longer be jacks they would simply be cylinders. The relief vaves would be left open and when you let the fluid come back to the hand pump the cylinders would retract due to gravity. If you put a valve on each line at the hand pump you could control two valves at a time to make the table level or not as long as the top of each cylinder has some type ball joint where it attaches to the table.
