    That looks great with a good price, I'd have done it! I wonder why one edge is beat to hell with all similar impact marks?

    I have dibs on that, I'll be picking it up tomorrow! Although I'm wondering about that extra hole in the plate and one in the waist........... UPDATE: I got it, a 160 lb Peter Wright, rusty, a couple of 1/2" holes in the table for bending rods and one in each side, same purpose. Well done mod's it work fine, still great rebound and sound. Long and slender dimensions. Wire-wheel here I come!

    Just got back, it's a Badger, looks just like the ad in AIA, but somewhat used! Man o man does the seller have some stuff!If I win the lotto I'm going back and wave money til he sells all of it!

    OK, I just bought the first one, an early "VULCAN BRAND" logo by Illinois Iron and Bolt Co., the casting is bad on the letters. Looks like a school anvil, painted battleship grey with blue edging and red highlights on one side, not too beat, 50 lb'r. Cost me $24/net. My wife got to buy her 'Secretary' at the same shop so we both be happy, an ya caint be happier than that! Huurrah for charitable gambling!!

    To chase a lead or not! They strike me as slightly upscale II+B Vulcans......but they guy says he has others too. 200 mile round trip......

    The filler/refractory in my tub is 1:1 clay cat litter and sand with several handfuls of clean ashes thrown in also. Mixed to concrete consistency and applied. It takes several days to a week dry depending on how much water is in it.

    That's a real nice forge and restoration job, very nice! "I understand that Buffalo has no interest in their history"--thats an understatement, I contacted them about new gears for a oil-less hand cranked blower that had chipped gear teeth, they wanted $250 per gear (3) to start!!

    I'm about to set up my area outdoors with a Lively-style charcoal forge, pan and blower coal forge, hot-cut anvil (2"x8" mild steel on a 3 1/2" x 48" steel tube sunk to height), post vise and anvil, using RR ties as bases for those two. Forges on the left, hot-cut, anvil then post vise. What's comfortable for you forgers/smiths? Trial and error experiences? Thanks!

    I made a mistake, it's not $1/lb. It weighs 202 lbs, so less then $1/lb! My 154 PW weighs 154 on same scale. Any maker mark is faint, might have to wire brush it. There is an '045' on the left side below the table with something unreadable preceeding it, an 'S' under the horn. The serial number seems overstamped, or double-struck, badley spaced anyway, did Hay Budden ever do that on purpose? Glad I passed on that Vulcan last week.

    This morning I checked out the "usual list" and saw a forge and blower. Hmmm...fairly close, call the gent, OK I'll be up there in an hour. Decent price. Make the deal, load it up and he says "I have an anvil" "oh yeah?" ..........We look it over, find a serial # and '200'. Not too beat up. What'dya need? $1 per pound. OK I'll be back in two hours. I knew I should took the stash with me and saved $15 in gas.

    It looks like a little TLC would help, looks good to me, but I dont know anything about that brand. Doesnt look all cast. I'd go if it were priced decently.

    Nice forges! Here's my Lively Design for charcoal. Question: if I want to burn coal, whats a good homemade design that'll allow me to shed the clinkers? I've got an extra blower laying around that needs to be breathing!

    If a knife gets a dull edge sharpen it. Been going on for a long time. If someone likes shiny new high-tech stuff over a RR spike knife, no biggie to me, mount it in your amoire. I use commercially mass produced knives every day and I dont mind having to run them over the stone when they need it, which is everyday. I'd have a lot more pride and satisfaction using a RR knive at home or in the woods than a stamped POS commercial chefs knife.

    Saw it today, it has a 16 on it so maybe 160 lbs. Really thin plate maybe 3/16", was used mainly as a cutting table by the looks of the face of the plate. Tapped it with a hammer in several places, "thunk...", no rebound to speak of either. Priced at $295.

    An update to the ad says it's a Vulcan 180 lbs, Made in U.S.A. ! Pics blown up seem to show a delamination/bad chip under the plate at a corner opposite the horn, or maybe it's just a sloppy production or crummy camera.     OK, thanks. I see Vulcan anvils are 'iffy', I'll take a look at it.

    The anvil in question has a raised crest on the side, an oval with a smiths hammer and what looks like an anvil, cant see it clearly.
