  1. Here's a few things I've been working on... I posted a pic of this cross before but I didn't like where it joined in the middle so I welded on a leaf to cover it. Candle holder My youngest asked if I could make her a snail. Can't remember if I've posted this before or not, but here's a bracelet. And lastly, I have a couple hundred rr spikes so this one is now a coat hook. One down and 199 to go... That's it for now!
  2. Thanks so much for posting this! I've been contemplating setting up a table at our local market once it opens. I know I won't make a living at this, but if I can generate a bit of cash to support the hobby, all the better! Now, just have to figure out selling prices.
  3. I use this recipe and it works real well. 1 part beeswax 1 part turpentine 1/2 part boiled linseed oil Got the recipe here... Finish Recipe Video I'm not really sure how this would hold-up outside in the elements. Might want to consider some type of clear urethane finish. Hope it helps!
  4. I didn't even notice that can of beer on the BBQ....lol! Beer-can chicken is the best way to cook one up on the BBQ. You don't have to use beer though, ginger ale or even water with some herbs and spices will work just as well!
  5. Very similar to the South Africa braai... although the term may just be like our "bbq". Definitely on my "to do" list! Hope it helps! :D
  6. Very nice knife! Hopefully you can get a picture of it in use - at the BBQ of course - you know, slicing through a perfectly smoked brisket! Although a piratin pic would be good too! :D
  7. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL Bob! I'd love to see the process for carving out the bird & branch. Is this done with a power tool or is it all hot work???
  8. Just wondering if anyone has any simple Mother's Day gift ideas or projects on the go. Thanks!

  10. Sure LeeRoy.... As Frosty said, it's ALL about resizing your pictures before doing anything with them - especially if uploading them directly to an album on this site. I have my pictures uploaded to an external host site. In my case, it's flickr.com, but there are lots of other sites like Photobucket and you can even link from Facebook, if you do it right. Essentially, you need to know the actual web address of the picture you've uploaded. This address has to end in ".jpg" or ".gif" and nothing else. There is a little button above, second from the smiley face that is for inserting a picture... this is where you add the image web address. When you upload a photo to Flickr, it actually keeps five copies of your picture, but all in different sizes. You can find the individual web address for each size and use whichever one is best - I usually go for medium size when I post. Here's an example of what I mean... Square... address... () Thumbnail... address... () Small... address... () Medium... address... () Large... address... () Hope this helps!
  11. Here's a few more.... If I shouldn't be posting this many pics, please let me know and I'll try to restrain myself the next time 'round! Paul
  12. Took the family to visit grandma & grandpa (my parents) in Florida for March break. We took a little side trip to BOK Tower Gardens and it really is a fantastic place! Thought I would post some pictures of the ironwork created by Samuel Yellin. The gates and brass door are his work, but I'm not entirely sure if he was responsible for the bronze snake on the sundial. If you ever get a chance to visit, it's well worth it... just make sure to give yourself a full day to enjoy it all! There are a few more pics on the next post too. Here's a direct link to the Bok Tower site for more info.... BOK Tower Gardens
  13. Great ideas! I like the tripod for your potjie. Ok, I actually like the potjie more ... just picked up my second one a few weeks ago. The pots are kinda scarce in my neck of the woods!
  14. Two hours???? That'd take me a few days...lol! Nice work - looks great!
  15. One of a kind, never to be duplicated = priceless. I like it!
  16. Wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a simple (small) musical instrument that could be forged? Not really sure what I'm looking for but any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
  17. Here's what is written in the instructions I received with my Diamondback forge.... "It's a good idea to keep some extra firebrick on hand, for closing off one end of the forge, or replacing floor bricks when needed. These are common and very inexpensive 4"x2-1/2"x9" available anywhere building supplies are sold (usually under $2 usd each)."
  18. I thought you'd reach curmudgeon status when you "sell" it to your apprentice. You know, slowly deducting amounts from their paycheck and not letting them use it until everything is paid in full!
  19. I have the a two-burner from Diamondback and the floor uses the same brick as that in a wood burning stove. The bricks are only $2-$3 and can be found at any specialty fireplace shop or maybe even home depot. If you can't find one right away, you could always flip the brick over as a temporary solution. I really like my forge, but I haven't come close to melting anything... even running at higher PSI. Wondering if your gauge is working properly... or better yet, wondering if mine is...lol!
  20. I think it looks real nice! We are always our own worst critics . It's great that you're holding onto this piece of family history - too many people these days don't see the intrinsic value in things like this.
  21. They make great woks (or discadas) when cooking for a large crowd.... Here is a dutch oven cook stand that I made....
  22. NIce job! I'd put it on my house and I'm not a Hillcrest.... love confusing the neighbors!
  23. I'm sure there is a formula out there somewhere.... but I just eyeballed it.
