That is a bit high. Ive been paying $0.35 a lb for cutoffs of higher grade steel bar( not fram a scrapper but from a metal shop). Sean

Sweeeeeeeeeeet! Gives me an idea for some shop stools. i am interested in just how much is not much money too... as the cast iron tractor seats seem to go for no less than $30 each( more like 40-50) at local auctions. Been wanting to make some stools from them but am a bit of a cheapskate( used to see these same seats go for less than $5 each about 2 years ago). Sean aka Bear

The other ones i was looking for were the dark grey shade welding glasses( ive used didymium with dark clips before) but they seem to have dropped off the face of the earth. Sean

Any good online sources for didymium glasses? Use to be able to find them on anvilfire but they dont seem to be on there anymore. Sean

Here is a pic. There are also (single digits) numbers on the mount and other places( seen this in a few vises as they are just a part number). Not like i care much about who made it as long as it works but i kinda like to know the history of my tools. Sean

The only id marks on the vise is the number 178 (stamped not cast) on the front jaw and the number 2 stamped into one of the smaller bronze pieces. I will try to get a clear pic of the number on the jaw.

The holes were for when it was originally made and still hot( metal poles were put through them so it could be carried easily). Definitely a good anvil as long as the face is in half decent condition. as for getting it free..... you suck:D just kidding. I paid $450 for my 200lb fisher from 1940 (but then it was in almost mint condition). Nice anvil! Sean

Hi all, Sorry Haven't posted in about 6-8 months( computer problems have kept me off list). Hopefully will have my new large forge up and running by the end of the month. Need help Id'ing this Very large post vise. Picked it up at a local auction last week and cleaned it up a lot. It is missing the spring( i have another one that should fit or i'll make a new one)as the one that was on there was a piece of jury rigged garbage. The box is solid bronze (as are the spacers). It weighs over 150 lbs(probably close to 180) and has 6.75" jaws. There is a 3/4 inch long chip out of the jaws but it is still a beauty. Looks similar to some peter wright vise pics i have seen( the double ring on the ball end of the screw and the very long lips on both post sections- pics 3 and 4). Any ideas? Sean AKA Bear

i don't know about that craig. My DeWalt since i got the newer style of 18v batteries just keeps going, and going, and going- and i havent bogged it down yet.I 've had it nearly ten years and it was reconditioned to boot. I looked at the new dewalts and i am starting to see more plastic parts than before. Hitachi makes some decent lower priced cordless tools too. Sean

Hi Sam and all, I try to buy quality when it is something i will use alot- But then there is a lot of brands that used to be quality and now are nothing but crud. Most craftsman stuff has gone down the tubes. Most of their air tools are nothing but crud and not any better than HF air tools and they cost about 3 times as much so i have a bunch of hf air tools( because they get used but not nearly as much as other things we have). The reason pacific rim tools sell so well is not just the price but because unless you are buying snap-on or mac( there is a few others) you are not buying something that is much better than the cheap tools. Dewalt is starting to cheapen out since B&D bought them. that is why i'm looking for older wood and metal machinery to restore to use as it is much better quality than todays standards. Sean

That is a big belt. 1.5hp should do it . saw a 2 hp baldor industrial go for $40 at auction today(ironfever auction). It draws 24 amps at 110v. My foley uses a 1" x 42"( i think) belt so it can use a smaller motor. Sean PS. happy birthday

Picked this anvil up from an auction today- for about $0.75 a lb. the edges arent too bad but the horn is a little blunt- weighs 95 lbs( or 0.3.11). Sean

Hi dodge, How big is that belt? What voltage is in your shop? 2hp will pull 24-25 amps on 110 v half that for 220. industrial duty motors are better at continuous duty, farm duty are water proof(or at least rain proof). You might be better of looking at your local scrap place for a used motor- or especially at yard/garage sales. I picked up 2 baldor motors for $5 at a garage sale- a 1hp industrial and a 1/3 farm duty- if you can find a baldor it will usually run no matter how rusty or gunked up it is. depending on your belt size i think 2 hp( read that as 2hp and not 2hp developed) might be overkill- 1- 1.5 should be fine. i actually have a 1/2 hp on my foley belsaw belt grinder and it doesnt bog down easily. me and my bro(hes the one in the pic) picked up this older red star radial arm saw( we already have one other same model) to make one complete saw and it came with two old railroad track grinding blades. kinda neat. Sean
