I read in one of my books[i forgot the title]
1.Harden at a cherry red,inthe dark
2.Quench in oil , then burn the oil off 3 times;because oil flashes at 600F
THis should give a spring temper

I thought ,you could take high carbon steel & give it a spring temper?

CLAY, USE 100% clay kitty litter it's pretty cheap.
STEEL' construction sites have scrap rebar just ask the foreman.
Scrap yards have all kinds of steel ,coil springs,leaf springs ,tie rods ,etc...;
some you can haggle on the price but be careful they are busy.

I have cut off a chunk & heat treated . It will harden, but I guess it depends on the
manufacturer.
Still the Army specs would negate that idea;{if I ever find them, but I do have a stock #}!

I, would put the clay in first then let the ash build up on it.
[ i think ash is acidic, so the clay will act as a buffer?]
