Using found steel 1. what was it used for IE. coil spring, leaf spring, old mowerblade.etc.
This will point you in the right direction; it's old job needed carbon to work (in most cases)
2. quench test (this site has info on this test)
I hope this helps OOPS! The boss is watch'n got'ta go! -
Is it possible, on the 1st.,weld'n blow to just use the vise instead?
(to avoid shear ) -
Make a leaf, and explain how the same hammer blows will also make a knife.
Longer leaves will get the point across, Boys are all about sharp and pointy.
Good Luck. -
I use lump charcoal when woking w/ high carbon steel.I have a regular coal fire in the forge.
I have 1/2 a 100lb dumb bell(let the laughter die down); put the char in a pot and after 5-10 hammer curls .I got powder, that I can then put on top of my steel.
Cover w/a steel plate;( to keep the fleas down). I may not be doing anything for the steel ,but it keeps my left arm buff. :D -
Thanks ,I'll have to try that .
That twisted spike could act as a drill. -
Why a golf ball as opposed to a wood handle with an insert that threads onto the tang?
The golf ball fits in the palm of your hand better. -
I've used it , and it works pretty good .
BUT it is dirty and you need to clean out the fire alot.
It works good on mild steel and the basic heat & beat jobs.
Hope this helps. -
