Hi all. New guy here. I have not been forging for very long. My good friend in NY state started teaching me, then my wife and I moved to Wa state. He taught me how to make a pair of tongs and I was hooked.
I bought an old anvil from a guy that I woodcarve with. It is a Hay Budden
weighs about 80 to 100 lbs. The serial nr looks like it could be 21019 or 21049, not sure and there are the nrs 8 5 bellow the Brooklyn NY.
The guy that I bought it from siad that his grandfather used it during the 20's and 30's. He thinks its over 100 yrs old.
The edges are pretty banged up but the face plate is in good shape.

My next project will be to build a forge but that can wait until warmer wearther.

So, your "friend" in NY infected you eh? Good for him, we can always use new guys, it helps us hone our story telling skills. Truth is it's an addicting craft lots of us are infected and can't seem to find a cure. Oh well.

Do you have an idea of what you want to make? Besides your basic smithy that is.

There is plenty of good info in the "getting started, lessons in blacksmithing and blue prints". Take a lunch and something to drink though, you're likely to get lost for some time.

Thanks for the info about the NWBA. I am hoping that there are smiths in my area.
I plan to make my own woodcarving knives and gouges that better suite my style of carving. I plan to make plenty of mistakes and learn from them.
And I am not afraid to ask for help.
