My favorite photo shows a huge 10,000 ton press swaging a chunk of hot steel about 3' in diameter. Notice the large cracks in both the top and bottom tools . For the type of work big forge shops do, the pieces shown in the pictures are fairly small and it is common for men working in such shops to wear T-shirts and cotton gloves when working on these relatively small forgings. From my own limited experience with forgings of this size, I have found that you learn how much heat your body can really take without getting hurt.
