Ok. I have decided to forge me a small cone mandrel to put in the hardie hole of my anvil. I was wondering if I should forge it from some 1045 or just mild steel?
Comments welcome.

Id use 4140...If it needs holes, once its hardened youll have a bear of a time drilling and tapping, but it can done, and itll be a good rockwell c. The 1045 would work once hardened.

Use mild Chris, you don't actually forge on a cone just true up rings; you can use wood for temporary tooling even.

Then there's the difficulty of forging, the more C the more resistance.
