hammerkid Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Ok. I have decided to forge me a small cone mandrel to put in the hardie hole of my anvil. I was wondering if I should forge it from some 1045 or just mild steel? Comments welcome. Chris Quote
forging1 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 (edited) Id use 4140...If it needs holes, once its hardened youll have a bear of a time drilling and tapping, but it can done, and itll be a good rockwell c. The 1045 would work once hardened. Edited January 2, 2009 by forging1 defined Quote

dablacksmith Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 i use mild but thats what i had lyin around ....whatever works! Quote
Frosty Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Use mild Chris, you don't actually forge on a cone just true up rings; you can use wood for temporary tooling even. Then there's the difficulty of forging, the more C the more resistance. Frosty Quote
